I am going to purchase an external HD for backup purposes. I currently running an ATA 100 standard machine (P4 2Gig 500 M, Win XP SP-2).

Can External SATA HD with USB connection be used with an ATA machine such as mine? Don't care about speed right now, but I do know that my next upgrade will be to a SATA motherboard and it would be nice to use this same External SATA with any future machine.

There are Ext Cases that have SATA + USB connectors, so that if one simply used USB would NO other adapters be required, and if so are they cheap and workable 'fixes' until I upgarade in a couple of years?

Thanks again everyone - yardcat

In the enclosure for the external hard drive is a little circuit board that converts the SATA to USB. So not having SATA on your mobo won't matter.
