Anyone have an idea why so many old posts are finding their way to the top of the lists?

I haven't noticed that. Is there a particular forum where you have noticed this issue?

From time to time I ave noticed some newer members responding to threads from months ago.  Not a problem.  Also most members are pretty quick to pick up on the spammers.

As Brian - Britechguy - said in his explanation to OldPhil spammers often attach spam to the end of old topics which automatically brings them to the top of the pile. If the spam is spotted and removed before anybody makes another post then the topic sinks back into its previous obscurity. But if someone makes a post after the spam post then the topic stays at the top of the pile. Of course it is not always spammers that post into old topics, as mjd420nova pointed out, it is quite common for honest and well meaning new members to post into old topics.

Topics are listed in all sections by the time and date of the latest post, with the newest presented first and then tailing off into the depths of BC's past.
