hello

I am unable to play VCDs with .dat files
on my system . I am using Windows 98 SE .

the error messages are :

Real One Player (ver 2.0) ->
A General error has occured :
The source filter for this file could not be loaded.

WinAmp (ver 5.04) [with power player] ->
MCI error : incompatible media

Windows Media Player (ver 6.4) ->
The source filter for this file could not be loaded. (Error=80040241)

I have reinstalled the OS . the problem still exists .

At present , I am using vlc player to play vcd s .
It has its own plugins . I am also aware of other media players .

However I am interested in correcting the problem with os .

Thanks

This is because you do not have the correct video codec installed. This article explains it better:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279242/

I think the problem is that you are using such an older version of WMP. Install this version and see if it helps:

^ Thanks for the response .
I tried by installing WMP9 . the problem still remained .

Gspot & AVIcodec are not giving missing codec name !

could you give the exact source filter's name required
to play a simple vcd (.dat) file . I need this to edit vcd
files and burn my own vcd s for children . converting
to other format doesnt help me . Thanks .

Download codec sniper from here:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Codec_Sniper

Run it and tell me if any of the codecs are broken.

You can click on start, then run, and type dxdiag and press enter. Then when the program starts press the next button to see if there any errors. Keep pressing next till your done.

You can also try downloading the latest and installing it or reinstalling the latest if you already have it

^ I am not sure that DivX player works in win 98 .
I'll give it a try and report back soon . Thanks .

However , I am using VLC Player to play the vcd
(.dat) files . VLC player giving mpgv & mpga as the
video & audio codecs . I assume that a simple video
codec for windows is missing from my system . I am
unable to find out .
