Ok so I had the cable company come replace the modem that wasn't working. They did that with the exact same model that I had before. Internet works fine on my phone and tablet...no problem connecting but my laptop is being dumb. It has the yellow warning sign and shows no internet connection. In fact when the wi-fi status screen it shows that packets are being sent but none received. So things I have tried to fix this:

Reset router and computer

Uninstalled Network card and re-installed with latest driver

netsh winsock reset catalog (resets winsock entries)
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (resets TCP/IP stack)
did these but at first was getting access denied problem so modified my registry so that they were successful and reset computer...still not working

ipconfig /release and /renew still no help

The crazy thing is I can use my cellphone as a hot spot and the laptop connects fine...no issues. It literally is just the new modem/router combo which is the same model as before and I wasn't having problems. If I connect directly to the modem/router with ethernet cable it also works fine.

I tried changing the channels from the router...i tried every country region for the network card

Oh should mention this is a Windows 8.1 laptop and I also tried the obtain ip address automatically' and DNS settings as well.

will post minitoolbox results here too....i am out of ideas

You might check that your router and laptop are both set to use WPA2-Personal (aka WPA2-PSK) AES (or TKIP & AES) and double-check your passphrase. It looks like you are getting half-connected, which isn't supposed to be possible, and could be due to a botched effort to discontinue support of WEP or WPA(1) or TKIP (most routers support both AES and TKIP at the same time in WPA2, but the current trend of manufacturers unilaterally deciding to deprecate older standards - often without informing clients in understandable terms - has resulted in a lot of "it worked yesterday..." type calls from clients recently.)

Can you connect to the wifi ok with other devices (like your phone) ?

Yeah actually my current workaround is having my phone connected to the home wifi and then using it as the hotspot for the laptop. Every device can connect to the home wifi so it a weird situation. I have actually been able to install ubuntu and use the wifi on the same laptop which tells me it isn't the wireless NIC or the modem/router itself but has something to do with Windows which is strange. I didn't install any software between the time the original modem/router broke and when the cable company came and replaced it....I even did a system restore to back before the original modem/router was broken (and the wifi was working fine on the laptop) but no success. This has been a brainteaser for sure! :)

Decidedly strange. You might try changing the passphrase on the router (temporarily at least) and see if the lappy will connect with a new phrase. You can change it back after you test so you don't have to run around changing every connected device. It could be that it's "remembering" the passphrase incorrectly, but what you've already done should have cleared that. Of course with everybody and their brother wanting to store all of your info in the cloud and share it across devices it may be getting reloaded (incorrectly) every time you delete it. I'd really be interested in seeing what the solution is, though. Make sure you drop a note if you figure it out.

Yeah I gave that a shot as well and didn't pan out. I am at the point where I am resigned to my fate of just using the phone as a hotspot lol. I think I have spent probably 10-15 hours at least trying to figure this problem out and it doesn't seem worth it to keep going at this point. It's not the best solution or most optimal but it will have to do. Thanks for the help though!  :thumbup2:
