The drawer opens and closes, and the drive light works, but the drive still does not boot off of the disc.

As asked previously by Havachat, which disc are you using?

One of the many discs I was using was, a Windows XP disc, and I know that it works, because I tried on a different computer and it worked.

Did you get the eye clean?  If so maybe the drive is bad.

Make the CD/Dvd the first Priority and try again.

You can if you still have issues make the CdDvd first , and Disable the rest or have all on CdDvd.

If that still fails try the CdDvd in another PC / Or buy a New One ....$25:00 in AU , or $5:00 at a Pc Recycler.

You can Clean the Lens ....BUT !  if you move the lens slightly ..your Kaput.

Only Ever dismantled 3 myself and cleaned and didnt have an issue on 2 , but one ended up reading ok but any Burnt disc wouldnt play else where.

Q tip and denatured alcohol.

Drive might be bad as suggested. Just because it opens and closes does not mean it works.

Did you change the boot sequence to cd/dvd as first?

In the beginning there was the command line.

You can buy a very inexpensive CD cleaning dist, normally they work quite well getting the accumulated dust off the eye.  But IMO if the drive is fairly old just replace it they are very cheap.
