My laptop (Advent K200, XP Pro V2002 SP3) has 3 USB ports.

For years I have connected a wifi adapter, a cordless mouse and a keyboard.

The keyboard has stopped working - nothing happens when I type.

The keyboard works on another PC.

I tried 2 brand new keyboards - both not recognised as USB devices (box says "needs W7,8 10")

The wifi and mouse adapters work in any of the ports.

If I Update Drivers it says "No better driver found"

I'm stuck - please help

Bill

PS I did search but could find no previous.

I did search but could find no previous.

Do you mean no previous Restore Points?

The wifi and mouse work in any USB port and the USB keyboard does not work in any USB port, correct? Do you have a system restore point if this just happened? If you added any files to the desktop in any account after the restore point date move them to the My Documents folder?

If you need to input anything using the keyboard for recovering your System Restore Points use the On Screen Keyboard.

Thanks John,

I should have said "could find no previous relevant topic so apologies if I'm repeating a question"

You read it correctly - I can move the wifi and mouse to any of the ports. The keyboard doesn't work on any.

This happened a month or two back then Xmas got in the way.

I don't know if there are any restore points or where to look for them

I can rebuild the desktop. The laptop's own keyboard works, I much prefer a full size kb.

I suspected the external keyboard and bought a new one. After I got home I saw on the box that the minimum requirement was W7. I returned it and got one for "Windows". Neither of them was accepted as a suitable USB device. I will probably try to find an old keyboard.

Today's Top Tip - Don't get old - they will punish you.

Below link shows System Restore for XP. Hopefully you have one going back to December and it works if you do.

Thanks again John,

Sadly I have 2 - today and a week ago. I know,  I know,  I should have created one while it was working OK.

See if you can get the keyboard to work with a live linux distro. Burn an iso of Lucid Puppy to a CD using any software that can burn an iso like isoburner. Boot Puppy. Does the keyboard work?

This sounds as though it may be related to my problem with getting my XP comps to read an external hard drive:

(although I think it got rather hijacked by something else)

Update

My keyboard did not work on the Linux boot.

I have obtained another keyboard which works.

My Kb works on the donor's PC
