Hi...new member...1st post to this site. Anytime night or day this system (Win7 x64) makes a popping/pinging sound and shuts down. I should say up front that I use a Forza backup system that has been acting weird. It goes in to the shop for maintenance/cleaning this Thursday. This could be the problem or possibly a contributing factor. I've attached a current MTB file (zipped). This system is about a year old and is used for very conventional things...no gaming, no crypto mining, etc.

Could I get a fresh set of eyes to look at the possible causes? There was a BSOD back on January 5, 2018 but these all seem to be application issues.

Thanks!

It's probably because your CPU fan has some issues. Kinda unusual for a new PC

BSOD can occur due to system config errors, why did you take it to the maintenance store?

Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Also new...this a.m. I was told by MS that a generic usb was having problems. I suspected this on advice from a friend who is a lot more tech-savy than I am. I can't tell and don't know how to read the info as to which usb device it is (unknown...it says) but clearly it needs to be found and either new drivers installed or replace the actual device???

Thanks to you both for replying! I did check the speed fan (see attached) and it seems fine.

makes a popping/pinging sound and shuts down

If you turn off/disconnect your speakers, does it still make the sound when it crashes?

When it "shuts down" do you mean that it literally loses electrical connection, the monitor goes dark, and you must press the startup button to boot up again, or do you mean that the monitor screen freezes and becomes unresponsive and it requires a hard shutdown with the power button, or maybe do you get the BSOD screen with white text on it specifying a code number (example: 0x000000e2 or some such)?

Hi Louis. How do I step thru actually getting MTB into a form that I can upload to you?

As for the question about turning my speakers off and then observing whether or not the sharp sound occurs...about the time all of this shut down started, I also lost my speakers. So I can't tell you even the source of the sound. It happened again about 1'/2 hour ago. Sorry I can't be more definitive.

Look forward to hearing back as to how I can get MTB to you, Louis.

Just follow the directions provided.  Copy the content of the text file...paste it into your next post.  Same as any other copy/paste operation.

System is not new...Windows install date of Sep 2015.

Those controller errors reflected in MTB...;would prompt me to download/install/run on each drive...SeaTools For Windows.  I would run the long generic on each drive.

SeaTools For Windows (Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung only) Download - http://www.seagate.com/files/www-content/support-content/downloads/seatools/en-us/seatools-for-windows-en-us.pdf

I see no indication that temperatures are a factor in your shutdowns.

Hi Louis,

I just discovered something that I never considered might be part of the problem.

I just unplugged everything from the Forza getting it ready for the trip to the shop tomorrow. I plugged everything that had been connected into the Forza into two large surge protector strips. Came back to my cpu to turn it on and my computer wouldn't fire up...I noticed the green lite on one surge protector flickering, and observed that the power cord to my computer was plugged into this strip. So I replugged it into the other power strip and voila...my computer powered right up.

So since I had lost my speakers at the same time this problem started, I visited the control panel, sound, speakers and tested the speakers...voila, they too work. So I'm suspecting a failing surge protector (which my Belkin usb is plugged into...which might give the signal to us and MicroSoft that there was a failing usb). Your thoughts?

The Forza will still go in to the shop. But now I've got the rest of the day to see if there are anymore snap-downs. Should I still proceed with the download and testing of SeaTools For Windows? If I attempt what you're asking me to do (never done this before) exactly how do I do I run a long generic on each drive, i.e., a-b-c?

Here's the result Louis. The dedicated 1TByte for Macrium Reflex took all night last night but all drives passed the long test in the 'green'.

Since I removed everything from the failing surge power strip (Belkin) including the Forza (which went into the shop this a.m.), there's been no further snap-downs. However the shop has informed me that both internal batteries of the Forza have to be replaced along with the power on/off switch. So tomorrow when I pick it up, we'll see if there are anymore snap-downs. I don't think so, but I'll report back after a few days.

Thanks so much for your detailed and patient help, Louis. I'm impressed!
