I have been experiencing some random shut downs of my IMAC desktop

Late 2012 build, OS 10.8.5

The 1st shutdown was in October then 2nd on Dec 30 and  3rd exactly 1 week + 1 minute later. Last shutdown was this Monday.

At first I suspected the UPS which I replaced. Also heard from a neighbor that their server went down approx. the same time. I suspected an external cause. Power company replaced the connection on the pole as it showed signs of corrosion.

Middle two shutdowns happened on Saturday mornings. I realized something occurred when I saw the password request screen.  No programs had been running.

The one this Monday occurred after I had started Quick Books and opened a word doc. Going about my usual morning business when all went black. Computer started up OK . Showed a report screen. I am showing that below.

Neighbors servers were OK.

My son suspects the internal power supply. I am unsure what may be going on.

Updating the OS is not an option. The version of Quick Books I use is made for the operating system on the computer. Updating the operating system would cause this version of Quick Books to not work correctly.

Running Kaspersky protection that came with the computer. They stopped supporting OS 10.8.5 last summer. Geek Squad installed a version that is compatible however it regularly gets stuck trying to update. Once I get this notice box the only cure is a restart.

As this computer is 5+ years old I will probably be replacing this Spring. I use this for my business and generally work on a 5 year replacement cycle.

Crash report from Monday:

The report indicates the launchd daemon was attempting to start something, and the Mac generated a kernel panic -- the system was unable to process something and performed the Mac vesion of a blue screen of death.

There are some things you can try to address this: https://www.macworld.com/article/2027201/how-to-troubleshoot-a-kernel-panic.html

However, given the age of your OS version, it's probably time to upgrade.

My iMac desktop is older than yours and with the help of Apple support, dealing with a different problem, they helped me to upgrade my OS to El Capitan. So far, so good. As for your Quickbooks problem, you're between a rock and a hard place. Maybe someone at Quickbooks support can suggest something.

Thanks sflatechguy and Twin B for your responses

Did it again today. Tried to copy the report but didn't work for some reason.

I am suspecting  Kaspersky might have something to do with it. Kaspersky regularly pops up a box saying it cannot connect to update source.

Once it does this the only fix is a restart. Possibly when it tries to phone home at the same time something else is occurring it causes a conflict.

Twice when it shut down it was on a Saturday morning when all regular programs like QB and MS office were off.

Kapersky and Timemachine would have been running. I always quit QB and Office at the end of the day.

Regarding contacting QB

It is QB for MAC 2013. QB does not want to talk with you after 3 years. They push QB online. This does not work for me as I am told it has no Item listing.

I have hundreds of items accumulated since I stared using QB in November 2000.

Shutting down for two weeks after tomorrow. Headed for a trade show in Italy. Will need to address the problem when I get back.

Any thoughts on running "Parallels" on MAC? Maybe I should get that on a new computer and run the windows version of QB. (??)

Best Regards

You could temporarily uninstall Kaspersky and see if the Mac's performance improves. I don't normally recommend uninstall AV software, but this would possible pinpoint the issue.

As for Parallels, you could just as easily install VirtualBox. It's free, and it does the same thing.

Shutdowns sometimes happened when all programs were off except those running in the background.

Last Summer Comcast supplied a new modem / router.

Not knowing what else to try in March I turned off wireless connection and just kept the Ethernet connection

Also, stopped Mail from trying to connect to Yahoo as Yahoo did not like the older operating system.

No random  shutdowns since. ( Fingers crossed!!)

Maybe some conflict with new modem / router. (???)
