I currently teach in Japan and need a decent laptop for video editing for projects for my kids.  I use to do it on an old gaming laptop I had but thats about 10 years old now and I have moved to a desktops for my gaming.  I am not allowed to take footage of the kids out of the school (for obvious reasons) so I have to do all editing at the school. Hopefully something that can handle after effects,  green screen and other cheesy effects.  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions,

Can you give links to a retailer that you would be shopping at? If so, I'm sure we could give recommendations based on where you shop.

Probably amazon Japan.  japan is kind of strange with electronics though,  cheapest stuff normally come from markets and not online.

Well, I'll give you a few options to see what you want to get. Really scarce picking from amazon japan in regards to electronics.  Here's what I found from cheapest to most expensive:

Thanks a bunch.  Yeh the normal trick is to see what options are in Japan off the websites then go to the market and find it..  If you are really board you can go to a maid cafe,  or go the top floor of the electronic stores and buy porn video games with win 95 os requirements.  There is even a store there tspecializing in word processors from the 80-90s if you are really bored.

what is you budget? As you are not a heavy user, you can go with medium settings. Even 4GB ram is enough. But better if you can go for 8GB. i5 is more than enough for you. But always go for the latest generation processor. As you are planing to do video editing, select at least 15.6" screen size. 1 TB hard disk would be better. Go for a SSD if you can. Separate Graphic card is not a must. But better if you can afford.

You can see some medium range laptops here. https://www.budgetgaminglaptops.net/gaming-laptops-under-400/ Asus or Toshiba are my favorite as they are reliable.

hi my friends,

for many reason i would not recommend a laptop for video rendering or for any 3d rendering and cad as well

but this does not mean that you cannot use a laptop for these jobs...

for video rendering up to 720p (not full hd) you will need a laptop with at least four gb of ram, 260 gb hard disk (ssd is a good choice) with integrated graphic card with up to 768 mb of shared video ram

an i3 is quite good but your job can be done with a much slower cpu like celeron 2.2 ghz or similar, better a four core cpu even with a slower speed (1.8 ghz)

for full hd video 1080 x 1920, 2k or 4k video you will need a high end laptop but again is not recommended since laptops even the high end ones does not last too long ! on these video rendering and 3d (too much heat, week graphics card etc)

an 720p video is quite enough especially if your source is full hd or 2k or 4k video (video camera, high end mobiles, hd web cams)

sony vegas now magix have top rated software

personally i do 3d and video rendering on my low end celeron desktop

good luck my friend
