So I'm infected
At first I actually had the name of the trojan in a pop-up window next to my time clock - but after running Ad-Aware Se and SpyBot - that went away - but doesn't necessarily mean it's gone right? Now i get a pop-up in the running process' next to the time clock - saying I have Malware - followed by a pop-up wanting to direct me to a spyware, virus, adware.....blah blah download web site to get rid of the problem - Also, next to the time clock - every once in a while it tells me how my pc speed has been reduced 46% and internet connection reduced 39% as a result of this infection - Hopefully this information will be of help - and i will be patientally waiting in anticipation for thoughts on what to do - Also, if you see some things i should get rid of then please tell me what you think - i will make backups and necessary steps in case I get rid of something that acutally was needed - for instance I don't use AOL anymore and I know apps like this like to hide wherever they can - I think the infection is the MPVIDEOCODEC/pmsngr.exe - but I would like some expert advice - Thank you very much!

Here's the Hijack log -

Hi Audi_vW and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

You got some infections.

Create a new folder named HijackThis to your desktop. Move HijackThis.exe into that folder.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

NOTE: Do not run any other options from SmitfraudFix until I tell you to do so!

Hello Mr JAk3 of the HJT team! Thank you for welcoming me and taking the time to address my problems

Ok - so the SmitfraudFix will not run - it keeps telling me that 'find is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file' so i thought maybe it was the download - so i downloaded again but no luck - Also i found out again what the messages that pop-up next to my time clock said - one is the NetWorm-i.Virus@fp and the other is PSW.x-Virtrojan - also it again tells me how my pc and interent connection is slowed by 39 and 46% respectively - Hope some this new information will spread some light on the situation

I will do another Hijackthis log in case something may have changed

here it is -

Hi again

Ok, let's try this...

Download FIXPATH2.ZIP Extract the files to a folder in C:\, like C:\FIXPATH2.

RUNNING THE PROGRAM:
  • Open a command prompt window by going to start > run and copy and type: cmd
In the command prompt, type: cd C:\

    So you should get C:\>

    Then type: cd FIXPATH2

    So you should get: C:\>fixpath2

    Then type: FIXPATH.EXE
  • It will display some preliminary information, and ask if it should continue and check for errors. Click Yes.
  • If it successfully updates the Path value in the registry, you will need to
reboot for the change to take effect.
After the reboot, please try to run SmitFraudFix again by following my earlier instructions :flowers:

Ok great

You have MyWebSearch installed. The program is suspicious and I recommend that you uninstall it.
If you want to keep it, skip the green steps.

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Download and install ewido anti-spyware 4.0
  • Open ewido anti-spyware
  • Click on the Update icon at the top of the window
    • Click on the Start update button
    • Wait for the update to download and install
  • Click Guard
  • Click under "resident shield is"
  • Change it from active to inactive
  • Quit the program, well use this later.
Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
Do NOT run yet.

There are new updates for SmitFraudFix available. Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #4 - Check for updates by typing 4 and press "Enter". If your firewall warns about SmiUpdate.exe connecting to the internet, allow the connection, press "Enter". Wait for the updates to be downloaded and installed. When ready, press any key and quit the program.

Open Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Remove all the of the following programs if found:

MyWebSearch

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

Restart your computer to the safe mode:
  • Restart your computer
  • Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts.
  • When the start menu opens, choose Safe mode
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Go to the My Computer and delete the following folders (if present):
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Restart your computer to the safe mode again.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

[*]Then click on the Save Scan Report button and save the scan to your Desktop where it can be easily found
[*]Copy and paste the scan results into your next post.
[/list]Restart the computer normally.

When you're ready, post the following logs to here:
- Ewido's report
- a fresh HijackThis log
- contents of C:\Rapport.txt

More good news - every step worked and the pop-ups are no more - along with the warnings next to the time clock - now for the possibly bad - after running the Ewido's anit-spyware i should've known that i was to save the report before clicking on the action to apply all - but i didn't - so obvioulsy after it fixed everything it automatically re-booted my computer - so no original report - i then ran it again and saved before i applied the action - sorry this is not the original report but i hope it still helps - also i can tell you that a HotBar.exe(i think it's an .exe) would not quarantine properly - and stated that there was an error attempting to quarantine - but that it would remove it.....but i'm thinking it's still there? maybe another program is needed to get rid of it? and also i can tell you that the original report had some 900 infections - as opposed to this report that shows only 40 something

Yes sir! sorry it takes me some time to respond every now and then - unfortuantely I work the graveyard shift at a hospital - so you know how it is - sleep all day work at night - then i go to school right after on top of that! i am very grateful for all the steps you are taking to help me - so please don't think otherwise
i don't know if you want the whole Kaspersky scan report - but if you do i will re-do and show you the whole report with several messages - for now i will just show you what came up as infected along with the blacklight which i can tell you found nothing -

And again - i cannot find the original Ewido report - that was my fault - since i applied the actions before saving the scan report - and once the actions were completed my computer automatically re-booted - so i never had a chance to save a report - so unfortunately there is no report to find and if you want the whole kapersky report i'll do so - thanks
