Is there a way to restore "previous versions" after a virus deletes them?

Moved from Win 7 to 'Am I infected?'

What are you referring to with previous versions?

Window 7 has one Service pack and a Convenience Rollup.

I am trying to restore previous versions of files on a pc that was hit with ransomeware, the virus wiped the previous restore points & file versions. I was wondering if there is a way to restore the previous file versions after being removed?

What kind of files are these?  Personal files or Windows files?

If these were personal files were these files saved in a folder?

Restore Previous Version (RPV) is tied into Volume Shadow Copies, Restore Points and Windows Backup so I would say the answer is if you have no Restore Points you will not be able to use RPV.

Let's make a test using the My Documents folder.  Note that anybody who wants to understand what RPV does (and what it doesn't do) could take 5 minutes and perform this test too.

Here you can see with a side by side image of Restore Points available and Restore Previous Version that there is one previous version of the My Documents folder offered for every Restore Point listed - the dates of the RPs and the dates offered by RPV are the same.

(can't post a screenshot so trust me).

Now I will turn off System Protection which will whack all my Restore Points, turn on System Protection (now I have no Restore Points) and check again for Previous Versions and I see now there are no Previous Versions offered.

(can't post a screenshot again so trust me).

The message from RPV is "There are no previous versions available"

I have a nice write up about how RPV works but can't post it because it include several screenshots and that doesn't seem to be allowed in this topic for some (silly) reason.

That is a shame.

Ah-ha - posting screenshots by mortals does not seem to be an offering in the Am I Infected forum so you will have to wait for another day to see my RPV tutorial/explanation of how it works (and limitations).

The information here should help.
