I am having the same issue with a computer with an older amd chipset.  I replaced the video card with another one, pulled that one and connected to on board video. also used another monitor and monitor cable.  still black on boot but can hear the boot up process is being performed.  I believe that this may be associated with the meltdown/spectre patch.  any thoughts?
