I recently got a virus in my Windows 10 / Dell XPS computer. I had AVG antivirus and Windows Firewall installed when the virus started -- the live protection and scans revealed nothing.
I first noticed the virus when any text box / blank field started randomly typing 'eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee' to infinity. I thought it was the keyboard at first, so I switched out the keyboard.
After I ran the scans (Malwarebytes & AVG) and came up with nothing, I tried to find another antivirus, and that's when I found that I couldn't connect to any antivirus site, Microsoft, or various other sites for help. I'd get a 'site cannot be found' message.
I tried restoring Windows 10 from a restore point. It would not complete, and kept giving me an error message that it couldn't access a file because it was in use by an anti-virus.
I tried Restoring Windows 10, and that wouldn't work either. I would get the blue screen of death, but I could reboot into the system.
Finally, I ran a portable version of SuperAntiSpyware from a USB drive, and it found tracking cookies and deleted 131 of them.
That seemed to stop the 'eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee' typing problem, but I still couldn't access the virus websites.
My next try was going through Task Manager and stopping every process I didn't recognize as valid.
Once I did that, I was able to access the antivirus websites. I uninstalled AVG, and installed Avira and ran the scan. It found no threats.
I ran TDSKiller, and scanned again with Avira, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware. No threats.
Again, I couldn't access the antivirus sites until I went through and again killed processes.
Does anyone have any idea what this virus could be? I've tried searching, just to try to find possibilities with suggested solutions, but nothing seems to come up.
Any suggestions as to how to get rid of it permanently? I'm going to try to narrow down which 'process' in the task manager is the culprit, but was hoping someone might have seen this before and have a fix. :-)
