Hello,

McAfee is most probably causing this... This since an update.
I've seen this A LOT lately
Take a look at these threads... I am sure you'll recognise it:

http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=83323
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/62675/checkup/
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=84323

From what I've heard is that McAfee solved this issue in an next update (I don't mean a database update, but the program update - install latest McAfee version)

Also, keep in mind, you Have the entire McAfee package installed including hackerwatch.. and you installed another firewall on top (zonealarm). Never install More than 1 firewall, because they are incompatbible and cause a huge slowdown as well.
So what I suggest first is to uninstall Zonealarm.

Also read this article:

What Really Slows Windows Down

And as you see, what's in the top 10 of the known programs that slow down a lot there and you compare it with your system - you already have at least 3 of them running together.

miekiemoes,

I thought that McAfee might been the source of the issue.
I have had them for years (Virus Scan) without any issues....
Since the updated Security system, it's been a pain..
The whole package (I really did not think that I was getting all that) was part of an update to my virus scan.
I had an issue, and McAfee suggested that I uninstall all my spyware and other saftey things and install theirs.
Not what I want to do.
They said there was a update to the new security center and I did it with the techs and it seemed to work.
Then a week later it would not update defs and the tech at that point wanted to uninstall all my saftey programs (ie, spysweeper, ad-aware, and such.) I do not keep them running but use them once a week for cleaning and such...
I did not know that there is a firewall installed from McAfee. I disabled Windows firewall so that I can use Zone Alarm Pro years ago.....
What firewall has been put on by McAfee??
I think it might be time to ditch McAfee even though they say there is a Update??? AGAIN??
If this is slowing down my system, then off it must come....
Any real Anti-Virus suggestions?
Perhaps CA , AVG or something basic like that???
My speed is 15,256 Download / 1795 Upload. Just taken at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ .
So you can see my speeds are quite good.
Open to suggestions...

Hi,

Well I am glad you also already noticed that this was McAfee causing this...
So you had to uninstall all your antispywarescanners from them as well? That's not right. Antivirus/security suites should be compatible with antispywarescanners. I understand that they told you to uninstall another antivirus and another firewall, since that is incompatible, but no antispywarescanners.
No other Antivirus (unless Norton recently with Spybot S&D) has issues with Antispywarescanners, so why McAfee? That's not right.

I guess Hackerwatch acts a bit like a firewall in McAfee you are having.
http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-1888.html
It's not a real firewall, but I can imagine it can cause incompatibility issues with Zonealarm together with some other McAfee related services running.

Another remark here..
I see you have Intermute AdSubtract installed. Nothing wrong with it ofcourse, but why having an extra adblocker when you already have that option in your zonealarm pro and Spysweeper? (btw, is this the latest Spysweeper version? Looks rather like an older install which you really should update)

Also, concerning your spywarescanners, I see you have a lot installed, which is ok ofcourse. Just make sure they don't start all up with your Windows. Because they are actually all doing the same.
Do you also clean with different vacuum cleaners?

Sometimes one can find what the other one can't, but for that, just use the 'on demand' scan.
Don't overdo with security related programs that do the same and let them all load in the background, they are resource hogs.

So, the choice is yours ofcourse what to decide... Keep McAfee or uninstall it and use a free alternative instead.
Look in my signature under AntiVirusscanners for Free alternatives, which are actually great scanners. You'll also find the non free Antivirus I recommend there.
Now my opinion:
Avira is the one of the ones I recommend as a free Antivirusscan. It is very good in detection - However, I have to say that it sometimes flags false positives as well.. but every scanner has this.
As a non free Antivirus, I recommend Kaspersky Antivirus (very powerful). Active Virus Shield is also powered by Kaspersky and is free, very good in detection but doesn't have that many options as the Non free Kaspersky Antivirus.
Or if you want an entire security suite (for that you should uninstall Zonealarm first), I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security.

Anyway, you can always try McAfee later again, maybe some issues with the program will be fixed by then, because I still think it's mainly because of incompatibility issues you are having all these problems now, which may explain why you had to uninstall all your other Antispywarescanners etc..

All the info you are stating makes good sense...

Check out the info below that I received as a reply from another forum....
I followed it and took a few other things out and it seemed to speed up a bit but I think that taking out McAfee will show the biggest increase in speed.....

I really did not uninstall the scanners as McAfee stated, they were not running all the time, I used most of the stuff "On demand" when I needed a "check-up" from time to time.....

See the info below:

I think that the advise above was truly a good suggestion....

Moving foward to uninstall McAfee and see what happens.....

Any comments are more than welcome..

Well, it looks like I don't need to post the intructions anymore to fix in Hijackthis, because that was my next step to do...

I wanted to fix the slow computer issue first, because fixing these entries in hijackthis wouldn't change anything about speed, it's just some random cleanup of entries that don't belong there.
That's why I wanted to keep that as a next or last step.

So, not sure anymore how to proceed here.... because you already received instructions for hijackthis. This is confusing.

Can you point me to the thread where they are helping you as well please?

I posted in that thread, since I am a member there as well. So I am going to wait what Ried prefers what to do.

In anyway, you already know now what the cause of your slow system is - so this was your main issue.

Just to update you on my issue....

It was in fact McAfee that caused the big slowdown.
I uninstalled it, purged all traces from my registry, and the fast computer was back and running fast.
I went with CA anti-virus and still kept my spysweeper and other helpful programs.
Running like a charm...
Thanks for your input and help.....

One Note: McAfee when they were just virus scan was a real good program and did not hinder the other running programs.
Since they went to a "Security suite" I (Not alone) had nothing but problems.....
