PC freezes randomly

Hello.

 

Some time ago, my PC started to randomly freeze. No warning, no sound, everything just freezes, and the only way to get it back is to restart the PC using the button. Happens about once per 2 days.

 

I've checked the Event Viewer, and there is nothing with time stamps of the freezes.

 

The only recent change I've made to my PC was getting an SSD about 2 or 3 months ago.

 

What else could I check? I'm writing a B.A. thesis right now and wouldn't want to lose my progress :\

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Regarding the Event Logs, the last freeze happened around 01:16 AM. I waited a moment, then restarted the PC around 01:19 AM.

Your Search errors possibly result from a corrupt index.

 

The controller error...has me puzzled.  Is your optical drive working properly?  Is it properly connected?  Are the optical drive and the WD drive connected on the same IDE cable?

 

The presence of a torrent program, a program considered to be a PUP, and code integrity errors relating to a driver on which I f can find no documentation...I am going to move topic to Am I Infected  for a malware check.

I've checked the inside of my PC and it looks like everything is connected as it should be. The optical drive is working properly. If by IDE cable you mean a bunch of colourful cables together, then yes, it uses the same one as the WD drive.

 

I use BitComet to speed up downloading larger files from the internet, as it has an option to use multiple connections at once to make the download faster.

 

If by PUP program you mean the Freemake Converter, I installed it a few years ago voluntarily.

 

I know what the code integrity errors talk about, and I already removed the program that was causing them.

Please do the following.

 

Download AutoRuns and do a search for VboxNetAdp in the list. Uncheck the box next to any VboxNetAdp found. [color=red]Do not Remove it[/color[\], only uncheck the box.

 

 

 

In the Search box type command.

In the Search Results list right click on Command and choose Run as administrator.

In the Elevated Command type the following:

Type CD\windows\system32 and press Enter.

Type LodCtr.exe /S:Backup_Original.INI and press Enter.

Note: This let's you backup the performance counters before we rebuild.

Type LodCtr.exe /R:PerfStringBackup.INI and press Enter.

I would suggest that you save your important data to removable media so that it can't be lost due to a system failure.  Use an external hdd, flash drive, a cloud account, DVDs or CDs, etc.

Because of this:

Some time ago, my PC started to randomly freeze.  Happens about once per 2 days.

it's hard to tell. I guess I'll just come back if it happens again, and if it does not for some time, I'll let you know.

It happened again a moment ago. :(

 

This time I didn't have anything opened up, and I was logged off (Windows+L). I went away for about fifteen minutes, and the system was frozen at the login screen.

 

I made a backup of my data.

When you installed Windows 7 on this SSD where did you get the installation media you used to install the operating system?

 

Do you still have this media?

 

What is the make and model of your PSU (Power Supply Unit)?

 

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and run the computer for a long enough to determine if this is happening in Safe Mode.

 

To boot into Safe Mode do the following.

 

With the computer off press the power button, then immediately start tapping on the F8 key until the Advanced Boot Options opens.  If the computer boots into Windows turn off the computer and try again.  The Advanced Boot Options will look like the image below.

You will need to use the up or down keys to navigate to Safe Mode with Networking, the press the Enter key to make your selection.

 

Let us know if the freezing continues in Safe Mode.
