Back in May this year (2017),Orange,who had been my e-mail provider, pulled the plug on their e-mail services,so i had to go over to using ''Google Mail''. I still have Win.Live Mail (WLM) on my PC - no problem - except !. If i wish to send an e-mail via the website of a company ie.i want to enquire about a product - if i click on their e-mail address it opens up in WLM.

I don't want to remove WLM completely because i have important e-mails stored in a folder within WLM. I've tried exporting them to another folder, but it doesn't work - or maybe i simply don't know how to do it ?.

Is there a way of disabling WLM inorder to retain my e-mails ?. Or is there a simple way of moving those e-mails to another folder outside WLM ?.

You don't need to disable or remove WLM.

Windows 7 has a setting for default e-mail handler and yours is clearly set to Windows Live Mail.   There is a program that I use on my partner's computer called Affixa that makes mailto: (and other mail triggers) send you to the compose window for Gmail (provided, or course, that you are logged in and both I and my partner are perpetually logged in to Gmail when our computers are up).  I have absolutely no affiliation with the producers of Affixa of any kind.  It's just worked well in my household for some years now (I can't remember exactly when we started using it, but it's been more than two years ago).

Also, as a second issue, how do you have your accounts set up in WLM as far as e-mail access?   If you plan to access a given account from multiple e-mail interfaces (whether on the same device or multiple devices) you should be using IMAP access.   If you happen to be using POP see if your e-mail can be configured to use IMAP instead.

Added IMAP vs POP info.

Hi - Many thanks for your reply. I've managed to prevent WLM from booting up every time i click on a contact e-mail address, by simply removing my old Orange e-mail address = i've disabled it. At least i don't have to shut it down every time now.

I'll have to have a look at how my G-mail account is set up as well as how Win.7 is configured so thanks for that pointer.  I'm not very computer savvy, but the friend of mine who built my pc for me could guide me through anything i need to do. I've moved the old e-mails in WLM that i had stored = the 'important ones' ,to another folder outside WLM.

Google Mail works fine, except that every now & again,it seems to forget me & i have to give either my old e-mail address or my phone # to remind it !!. I'll see if i can get Win.7 set to accept g-mail as my default e-mail handler. I'll also investigate ''Affixa'',

                                                                                                                                  Many thanks once more.
