Running Win 8.1, using mostly Firefox 57.0.2 (64-bit), protection by Avira anti-virus (paid for), and MWB (paid for), and I'm ANAL about promptly installing my MS Windows critical updates.

Don't think I had this problem before THIS:

Fairly recently (<2 weeks), while using Firefox I clicked on an innocuous-looking link from a site I trust to an article that interested me on a different site. I looked at the link before I clicked, it seemed to be a reputable news site (admittedly one I hadn't heard of before.) After a couple pf minutes, I got a "Your computer has been infected, call Tech support...." pop-up. I immediately started task manager, and <killed all Ff processes>. Waited a minute or so... Started Ff again... instead of the crash report and option to start a fresh browsing session, Ff spawned the same pages - and I got the same pop-up!

GRRRRR!

I've rebooted in safe mode, run both Avira & MWB, and neither report any infections.

Since then, I've d-loaded updates to apps I run like Apache Open Office, and the d-loaded .exe installer won't execute.

Can't WAIT to get rid of this POS malware...

Checked the archives, found how to delete a familiar-sounding malware from Chrome...

How to delete from Firefox? Any ideas?

Best, and thanks in advance,

Big Lew

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

Hi BCA, Sorry for the delay responding - been crazy busy @ work.

D-loaded Security Check. Moved it from <Downloads> folder to desktop. Wouldn't run: "Your Internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened." Same error msg I've been getting.

Rebooted in safe mode - same results. (Grrr....)

Will try Farbar now. Be back in a few to post results.

Best,

Big_Lew

Hi (again) BCA...

Same results w/Farbar - nogo in both normal & safe modes... Same msg.

Sorry if this is against protocol, but here are 2 interesting snippets from the Avira Update Log from 12/25.

Things I notice are the MULTIPLE

9:33:36 [UPD] [INFO]            The IGNORE flag is set for the file 'antivirus/15.0.34.16/win/en-us/en-us/scanjob.avj'. The file will therefore not be taken into account.

and

9:33:25 [UPDLIB] [INFO]     File antivirus/15.0.34.16/win/en-us/x86/avkmgr.sys's operating system doesn't match the current one. File ignored.

Error msgs.

I remember way back in the day, I used to be able to scan my machine remotely w/Symantec and Norton. Is there something similar I can use here? Seems whatever virus I have is preventing anything local from running that might ID or clean it.

BTW - Happy to PP donate once I get clean. Worried about PP user & pwd being compromised right about now...

Thanks again,

Big_Lew

OK... Making progress here (I think!).

I'm in Safe Mode w/Networking. Using Chrome instead of FireFox.

Found THIS on the web:

  1. Windows 8 or 10
    1. From the Start screen, type inetcpl.cpl, and then press Enter.

  2. In the Internet Properties window, click the Security tab, click the Ineternet zone (globe icon), and then click the Custom level button.

  3. In the Security Settings window, scroll down to Downloads File download.

  4. Click to select Enable.

  5. Scroll down the list further to Miscellaneous > Launching applications and unsafe files.

  6. Click to select Prompt (recommended).

  7. Click OK.

Followed the steps there, SecurityCheck ran successfully! YAY! Report follows:

So I kinda started thinking that I might not be infected. In normal mode, I was able to install the Open Office update that I couldn't install before.

Also installed the recommended version of MBAM.

Also updated Java, uninstalling old versions.

Still in normal mode, ran both Rkill & Rkill 64. MBAM ran, MBAR would NOT run.

Hmmmm.....

Noticed in the documentation for Rkill that it scans memory to stop infections and allow other tools to run pristinely.

Rebooted back into safe mode with networking.

Ran both Rkill & Rkill 64. MBAM ran, so did MBAR.

p22002970.gif Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

p22002970.gif Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
  • The tool will start to update the database if one is required.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Logfile button.
  • A window will open which lists the logs of your scans.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Double-click the most recent scan which will be at the top of the list....the log will appear.
  • Review the results...see note below
  • After reviewing the log, click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[CX].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of X represents the most recent report).
  • To open a Cleaning log, launch AdwareClearer, click on the Logfile button, click on the Cleaning tab and double-click the log at the top of the list.
  • Copy and paste the contents of AdwCleaner[CX].txt in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved to C:\AdwCleaner.

-- Note: The contents of the AdwCleaner log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name or entry that you recognize and know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, return to AdwCleaner before cleaning...all detected items will be listed (and checked) in each tab. Click on and uncheck any items you want to keep.

p22002970.gif Download Sophos Free Virus Removal Tool and save it to your desktop.

Hi again BCA,

One odd thing I noticed tonight: Whenever I update or uninstall any program, I run CCleaner to scan the Windows registry. (I find most uninstalls and updates leave dangling registry entries.) I was impressed, as CCleaner only found a handful of bogus registry entries after I updated AOO - and none of them seemed to be related to AOO. Another habit I've gotten into is scanning the registry more than once per session - until it comes back clean. Occasionally, a second reg scan will uncover more dangling reg entries.

This evening, I was surprised to see that the same registry entry kept reappearing after CCleaner repaired the registry:

Missing TypeLib Reference IBackupLocationsShellFolderImpl - {0020424-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} HKCR\Interface\{F0E3A5D7-80C7-4228-9OFE-61DF01C417A5}

Scanned & repaired registry 3 times, same invalid entry showed back up every subsequent scan. BTW - the exact msg above is retyped from a screen cap, so I can't guarantee it's a character-for-character verbatim, but I was pretty careful so my confidence level in its accuracy is about 95%.

So to sum up - the fact that MBAR wouldn't run in normal mode, plus the magically reappearing registry entry NOW lead me to believe that I do, indeed, have a virus - most likely a RootKit infection.

I consider myself pretty computer savvy, and I'm just trying to make the best use of the tools you recommended and see how far I can get on my own here. If I've dug myself in even deeper today, it's on me!

Thanks again for your earlier advice. It's a holiday weekend, and I look forward to reading your responses when you can comfortably find the time to digest all the info I've posted here - no worries!

Happy New Year,

Big Lew

One question - TFC webpage says: "Please note TFC is not suitable for use on Windows 8.1 or 10" and I'm running Win 8.1

Does that matter? (Couldn't turn off bold!)

Best,

Big Lew

Unable to run Sophos - either safe mode OR normal mode.

Still in safe mode, d-loaded Sophos, copied .exe from downloads folder to desktop, ran installer as admin, got "The Windows Installer service is not accessible in Safe Mode. Please try again when your computer is not in Safe Mode or you can use System Restore to return your machine to a previous good state." error msg. This is BS...

Rebooted to normal mode, re-ran installer as admin, got "Error 1606.Could not access network location data." error msg.

Grrr......

Hey - When I post multiple log files in one post, I could post my identifications in BOLD to separate the log files, or I could demarcate log files...

Like so...

Would either of these be helpful for you?

Thanks for your time,

Run this instead...

You should stay in normal mode if possible.

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Under "ESET Online Scanner" click on "Scan now" button.
  • It'll download small file "esetonlinescanner_enu.exe".
  • Double click on downloaded file.
  • Click on Accept button.
  • Checkmark "Disable detection of potentially unwanted applications".
  • Click Scan
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

OK - Ran Eset exactly as instructed. Didn't give me an option to save a log file, but the on-screen report said "No threats detected."
