Just wanted to add that I have followed the "Home Search Assistant/CWS_NS3 Removal Guide" found on this forum up to Step 9. I have loaded all the downloads recommended. I was ready to start doenloading shell.dll and replacing destroyed files when I found I was right back where I started. Must have been too conservative in my clean up as I don't know what I am doing and I didn't want to "fix" and delete anything I didn't recognize as associated witht he Home Search infections. At any rate, I get a DOS message when booting up a file associated with the running of windows is missing and now I have a whole new batch of infected entries

P.S.I am also getting the following error message in DOS before the computer boots up, so I need to have one of you folks advise me what to do about it also. thanks, in advance

"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or System.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

Ok, folks, here is my latest log. I had some trouble overwriting the old Hijack This so I hope I can get it to run again (P.S.-I was trying to keep the old hijack this, since it had the backup from when I tried to fix before, in case I had to restore something. I guess I did it 'cause I now have the 1.98 and 1.99 versions on my system in different locations Hurrah!!). thanks, in advance. BarneyB

I will certainly do whatever you say, but the Planetluck, Starluck and party poker are legitimate programs. I assume if I dump them I can go to their website and redownload them (after we get everything cleaned up?)

grinler, the backup log is showing that these two items have been fixed (all three times I tried) but they won't go off the hijackthis log? As a matter of interest, I just ran a scan in the old V1.98 version of HiJack this and the two O15 IP entries don't show up?!

Nope, no luck. Can't get rid of them even in "Safe Mode"?

Please download and install the program Registry Lite from here:

http://www.resplendence.com/reglite

Once it is installed, please double click on the icon that should now be on your desktop. If an icon is not there, then check under programs portion of the Start Menu.

Once it is opened, copy and paste the below line, into the address field of Registrar Lite.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges

And press enter. Right click on the Ranges subkey on the left and click on export. When the export window opens, change the save as type to regedit4 reg file and then give it the filename range.reg and save it your desktop.

Right click on that file and then click on edit. When it opens in notepad, paste the contents of that notepad into a reply to this topic

You are starting to get real close to over my head. I have checked the download page and don't see anything for my Windows 98?

I am going to go ahead and download Registrar Lite, Version 2 in the hopes that it is the one I need.
