I'm looking for a web site that will explain in a simple fashion different PC components and how to get the most value for the money spent. Any recommendation? I'm a single parent on a budget and I'm hoping to get something for under $1000 that can meet the needs of home, school, some work, and games.

ArsTechnica publishes periodic System Guides that seem to work quite well. In the old days they only offered 3 flavors (God, Hot-Rod, and Budget) - but now they're branching out into office computers and small form factor systems.
