Hi.  I hope this is the best place to post this query.

I've been working on the internet using a mobile broadband dongle (maybe not ideal, but the only option I know of which will allow me to work on all my different computers at all necessary locations).  Suddenly, a few days ago, my Windows XP (SP3) laptop stopped recognising it, while I was in the middle of working.  Not sure that I'd done anything which might have contributed.  Now when I try launching it I get the splash screen, but nothing more.

I decided maybe I'd better reinstall the software, so went to Add & Remove Programs to do so, only to find that the software was no longer listed!  Very strange. Tried Advanced Uninstaller Pro, CCleaner, Revo Uninstaller - none of them could find any trace of it.  Tried going in via All Programs and launching or uninstalling from there, but in either case I got the message that there was already an instance on the program on the computer and that I needed to uninstall it first!  But I can't!

It can't be the dongle itself which is at fault - it still works fine on another XP machine plus a Win 8.1 machine - so I'm bemused as to what can be the problem.  Security software on the machine is AVG Internet Security (removed and reinstalled that to see whether it might be causing the problem - no effect) and Malwarebytes Antimalware Free.

The software itself is T-Mobile Broadband Manager, Bytemobile something-or-other, I think it's called.

Many thanks if anyone has any suggestions!

Moved from Tips/Tricks to XP.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

FWIW, I think whatever it was went wrong was in the early hours of the morning of 12th December my time.  I did notice something in Event Viewer about PlugPlayManager(?) not working around that time.

And here's Speccy:  http://speccy.piriform.com/results/lLOLql7gGsZo7OXhWXAz1Af

Thank you very much.  I may not be able to get back online until I get back to work on Monday, but your help is very much appreciated!

BTW, hamluis, I meant to ask - do you definitely think this is an XP problem?  It's not - touch wood - happening on my other XP machine.

Well...it appears that you have an XP install date of 2009...yet there are no hotfixes/critical updates apparent post-SP3.  That's puzzling since I know that there are at least  close to 200 that should have been installed.

Outdated java, questionable Spybot program installed...system security posture is not the best.

System is a good candidate for malware, IMO.  If it were mine, I would either clean install and update...or initiate a new topic in the Am I Infected forum.

That's really weird: I've installed virtually every update (apart from a very recent one which failed) up to this summer - should they be showing up?

I can remove Java, no problem.  You don't like Spybot?

I take your point about the malware candidacy :(  My problem is that I can't unfortunately do a clean install - long(ish) story, but I don't have functioning backups for a number of the programs I have on there and need to keep active.  I've got Malwarebytes Free on there (sorry, you can see that :) ) - Premium is clashing horribly with AVG on my other XP machine.

You know...I and other members...only state/suggest what we think is appropriate for the situation.  We do not try to work miracles...we do not try to produce disaster.

If you do not agree with any suggestion/comment by a given member...just wait until someone posts something that you find more palatable/agreeable.

It's certainly not a question of not agreeing with you or anyone else, hamluis - I bow to those who have greater expertise than I do, not that that's difficult!

Well, I ran RogueKiller on the system and it came up with a lot of PUPs and so on which Malwarebytes had ignored.  I've got rid of those, but there's still no sign of the software showing up.

Perhaps the "Am I Infected" forum might be a good idea - I'd managed to miss that one.  Thank you.

If you have a RogueKiller log, you can just post that in the forum for Malware Removal Logs, rather than posting in the Am I Infected forum.

Look in the Registry. That's the only place where everything has to stay!

Be sure to remove all entries certainly referring to it. And make sure to remove also all its folders from Documents and Settings, they can create all sorts of problems.

Stupid me!  I thought I'd posted the solution to this here, but obviously I hadn't - and now it's happened again :(  What I think was the solution last time was that it was (a specific update of) AVG Internet Security (or possibly Free) blocking it, and that when I uninstalled AVG the broadband was magically all right again.  So, I've now dumped AVG and installed a trial version of BitDefender instead.  That had been behaving well, and I was about to commit to buying it when this happened!  I wondered whether a similar thing had happened, and a BitDefender update was now blocking the broadband, but I've uninstalled BD (as far as I can see - the uninstallers don't show any remnants) and nothing has changed.  In the meantime, I'll carry on investigating the BD angle, and also try working out whether I can uninstall the broadband software.  If I could do that, it might well sort the problem.

Something else which has turned up since this problem recurred is that I get persistent messages from Windows Installer about needing to reinstall the Roxio Update Manager or something: I don't know whether the two are connected, but will try investigating that approach too.

I've just nipped into the office to piggyback on the broadband there so I can try and get this sorted, but apart from that I may not have much internet access for the next little while, so apologies in advance if I don't reply to anything quickly.
