Windows Media Player not playing .MP4

For quite some time, the only way I have been able to play mp4 video has been by changing the file type to .avi.  I would very much like to get this problem fixed, and appreciate any suggestions.

I have attached an image file of the message I get.

try using VLC to play your videos.......
