Posted 26 September 2006 - 06:57 AM

I have a 600kbps cable connection. When I check it with Tweakmaster, it rarely exceeds 200 kbps. I realize that it is common to be a bit below the advertised speeds, but this seems excessive. The ISP claims it is not their fault. (naturally)

I wonder if I have a problem with my system being hijacked to send spam emails.

Running WPFind didn't show anything that was obvious to me, but I also realize that some spyware or Trojans disguise themselves as something else. I have copied and pasted the report below. Maybe someone will see a red flag or should I start getting very tough with the ISP?

Thanks in advance,

What program created the scan you posted?

The first thing I would suggest is that you run a few web based scans.

This is relatively new and quite impressive - it is far more than just an anti-malware scan:
Windows Live Onecare Free Scan
http://safety.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
Click on "Full Service Scan"

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400#betatest
and
File scanner and virus scanner

Panda Activescan

Trend Micro antivirus and malware scan:
http://housecall-beta.trendmicro.com/en/st...orp.asp?id=scan

Trojan scans
Sygate Trojanscan

Windows Security Trojanscan

See instructions for it here:

Parasite scan from Aumha:

Do you have a firewall that will stop unauthorized outgoing connections to the internet or are you using the Windows firewall which does not?

If you do not have a firewall other than the Windows firewall I suggest you get one of the freeware firewalls that are available.

Software firewalls with freeware versions
(Run only one and disable the ineffective Windows XP firewall)

ZoneAlarm (freeware)
http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm/3000-10435_4-10039884.html
(you can have only one software firewall running. More than one will conflict)

Comodo firewall (freeware)
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

What did you use to determine your connection speed?
Here are a few speed tests:
http://www.testmy.net/

http://www.dslreports.com/stest

http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

http://www.speedguide.net/speedtest/

As I mentioned in my post, I used WPFind for the report and Tweakmaster for the speed test.

Thanks for all the links. I have in fact used some of these previously.

FWIW, I have a dual CPU system with two P4 3.0 GHz processors and 2 GB of RAM. It doesn't seem likely that it's a system problem dragging it down, but anything can happen, as we all know.

It may well be malware.

Read the following carefully and follow the instructions there to post a Hijack This log in our Hijack This Logs and Analysis Forum
