Hi all,

Here's the web address for my speccy system snapshot: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/eh0oshPLyXwqXbchIlX8aqD

I'm looking for help diagnosing the problem(s) with my desktop.  Random BSODs resulted in me updating all drivers, etc., which reduced their frequency.  However, they are continuing to plague me  (different error messages almost every time). I also continue to have a number of other strange issues:

1) When booting the computer after it has been shut down for a number of hours, it will, without fail, freeze and require a hard reset.  This seems to happen after about 5 minutes have passed.  It doesn't matter what program is used (even if I leave it on the log in screen, it will do the same thing).  After restarting, it does not do this again (until the next day when it's turned on after being shut off overnight).

2) I'm experiencing random freezes while playing more demanding games.  When this happens, the screen locks and the audio stutters/loops as well.  It's impossible for me to do anything other than a hard reset at that point.  Sometimes this will happen every 5 or 10 minutes while a game is running, while other times I can go an hour or more with no issues.

When checking the reliability monitor, I can see that almost all the freezes appear to involve "RAVCpI64.exe," (which might explain the weird sound aspect of those freezes) but there are other critical events listed as well that don't repeat, so I'm stumped.

Sysnative hangs at "waiting..." but I'm hoping I was able to zip the correct file/info, which is attached.  Please let me know if I've made an error in that regard.

Thank you in advance for your help.

When it freezes during the initial boot, where does it freeze?

What's the last thing that you see on the screen?

When playing a demanding game, please monitor your temps with one of these free utilities:

SpeedFan:  http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
HWMonitor:  https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
HWInfo:  https://www.hwinfo.com/download.php

Keep and eye on the temps while playing to see how high the temps get.  If possible, set the game to play on Windowed mode so that you can keep the temp monitor window on screen also.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version V1.5) dates from 2009.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.
FYI - W8 and W10 communicate more with the UEFI/BIOS than previous versions of Windows, so it's important to ensure that the UEFI/BIOS is kept up to date (and the outdated UEFI/BIOS' may be the cause of some compatibility issues).

I am very concerned about the compatibility of this BIOS version with later versions of Windows (W8/10).   Unfortunately, the only way to test this is to install the original version of Windows that this system was originally designed for.  On a positive note, if the system manufacturer offers W10 support for this device - then compatibility issues become less of a concern.  If they don't offer W10 support, then the concern about compatibility remains high.

Only 5 Windows Update hotfixes installed.  Most build 15063 (1703/Creators Update) systems have more than this.  Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available Windows Updates.
The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.

D: drive only has about 6% free space.  Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance.  Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty).  Low free space can cause BSOD's - but the actual amount depends on the files being used by the system.

More to follow, have to reboot my system...........................

Debugger is getting stuck on one of the memory dumps.  Will post back once it finishes.

Meanwhile, I ran one dump on another debugger and it may help us to run Driver Verifier.
Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions:  http://www.carrona.org/verifier.html

Finished!

3 of them blame Avast.  I suggest:

- uninstall Avast

- run Avast removal tool (see http://www.carrona.org/avuninst.html#A  )

- the use Windows Defender temporarily while troubleshooting.

- then download and install the latest version of Avast after the system is fixed.

Could also be one of these:
Out of 7 memory dumps there were 6 different BSOD  (aka STOP or BugCheck) error codes.  The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things (the list is not in any sort of order):
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case.  Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- overfull hard drives (drives with less than 15% free space)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html or http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html ).

Please get a head start on the hardware diagnostics - they are located here:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html
Please finish ALL of them and let us know the results.

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting.  Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.  i5 and i7 processors can be "auto-overclocked" by using Intel's TurboBoost feature.  If so, it's safe to disregard this caution (for the TurboBoost feature).  Although the system may appear to operate normally with the overclock, there's no way to tell if it's affecting something that we can't see (and that may be contributing to the problem).

Please update these older drivers.  Links are provided in order to assist you with looking up the source of the drivers.
If unable to find an update, please uninstall the program that is responsible for that driver.

DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable!!!:

Thank you so much—will start on this list of tasks once I get home and respond with the requested info as soon as possible.

In the interim, regarding the first two questions about the freezing when it boots up, this happens no matter what—when I have programs running (Word, Chrome, etc), when I haven’t touched it after turning it on and it’s been left on the log in screen, or when I’ve logged in but not opened any programs. Whatever was on the screen is still there, no error message. When I reset it doesn’t do it again.

So far I:

1) Ran Driver Verifier.  Memory dump file is attached.

2) Uninstalled Avast--so far so good (hasn't frozen since).

2) Attempted to update BIOS but the only update I can find requires booting from an external drive.

3) Ran hard drive diagnostic--all drives passed.

4) Am currently downloading latest Windows update after manual check.

5) Made sure I have over 15% free space on all hard drives.

New oddity: my keyboard is not working on boot (not lit up) about 50% of the time.  I have to unplug it and replug it into the usb port, and then it works fine.  I've tried different ports but there's been no difference.

I still need to run the memory diagnostic and am tracking down outdated drivers.  Will add information/updates as they arise. Thanks again for your help.

Did you run the long/extended test on the hard drives?

This one most resembles a hardware BSOD.
It is not a Driver Verifier Enabled memory dump.
I'd suggest running Driver Verifier again and let it cause 3 crashes - that way we stand a better chance of catching a verifier-enabled memory dump.

Please update these older drivers.  Links are provided in order to assist you with looking up the source of the drivers.
If unable to find an update, please uninstall the program that is responsible for that driver.

DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable!!!:

Yes, I ran the long/extended test on all hard drives and they all passed.

I believe I have updated and/or uninstalled the programs for the outdated drivers with the exception of:

archlp.sys

SaiMini.sys

SaiBus.sys

With these drivers I cannot locate an appropriate update, and can not find the installed programs they are supposed to be attached to (and thus cannot uninstall them).  Not sure what to do in that regard.

I am currently running the Driver Verifier again--no BSOD yet.  Also no freezing on boot up, so that issue does indeed seem to have been Avast related.  Other than the keyboard oddity things have been running smoothly.  I plan to run some of the games that were freezing up tomorrow and monitor the temps (also see if that will trigger a crash).  Will post new memory dump after three crashes as advised.

The first one is from some sort of Arcsoft Total Media Player.

The others are from a Saitek device.

If you can't find them, let's leave them alone for now and see if that makes a difference.

So I've been running the driver verifier and haven't had a single BSOD.  Also no memory dumps when I checked.  I haven't been having any freezing either, and that includes when running games.  I did monitor the temperatures with Speedfan, but nothing was over 65C and I couldn't get it to freeze again so I don't think that's the issue.

Re: old drivers, I've looked for both, but the only thing related to Arcsoft I can find is a folder with the installer for a free trial (that is not currently installed).  Not sure what the Saitek device was but it's no longer listed either.

At this point the only odd thing that is happening is that sometimes when I boot up the computer (I'd say it happens about every three times I turn it on), it hangs on a black screen with the blue windows logo in the centre and the spinning loading circle below it--it'll sit like that for hours.  I end up having to hard reset it.  It will also sometimes boot up but show me absolutely nothing on my monitor--the monitor spends its time trying to find signal (to no avail).  I'm still having the intermittent keyboard issue where I have to unplug it and plug it back in two or three times before it will light up and the computer recognises (I'd say this happens 50% of the time, and it always happens when I have the boot up issue with the loading screen), so I'm wondering if those things may be related.

So, good news mixed with some new oddities. I did check to make sure the last update installed correctly, as in the past I had similar loading issues after a failed install, but it says I'm up-to-date.

Well, right now I'd say that it calls for a clean install to rule out software and hardware problems:

If you make an image of the hard drive (as it sits now), you'll be able to return to it if you wish (check the Backup forums for more about this):

A clean install is:
- Windows is installed to a freshly partitioned hard drive with legitimate installation media (W10:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 ).
- The installation media is only a copy of Windows, not the OEM recovery disks that you can make on some systems.
- Windows is fully updated after it's installed.  That's ALL updates - none excepted.
- NO 3rd party software is installed.
- There are no errors in Device Manager (if you find any, post back for suggestions).

This will wipe everything off of the computer, so it's advisable to backup your stuff first.
Also, it will wipe out all the special software that the OEM added to the system, so if you rely on any of that - let us know what it is so we can figure out a way to save/download it (the easiest way is to create/obtain the OEM;s recovery media)

If unable to find recovery media that has the software (or if you suspect that this is a hardware problem), you can make an image of your system that'll preserve everything in the state that it was in when you made the image.  You can also do this if you don't want to try another hard drive - yet you want to be able to return to the current system state.
One drawback to this is that you're making an image of a malfunctioning system - so, if there are errors in the system software, you'll have a nice copy of them :(
Another drawback is that the image of the system will be very large - so you'll most likely need a large external drive to store it on.
But, this will allow you to save everything on the hard drive (although you'll need an image viewer to get things out of the image).
The point here is that, if it's a hardware problem, then you can restore the system to the point it was when you made the image - after you repair the hardware problem.
You can obtain more info on imaging in the Backup/Imaging/DiskMgmt forums located here:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/238/backup-imaging-and-disk-management-software/

The point of doing this (the clean install) is to:
- rule out Windows as a problem (if the problem continues, it's not a Windows problem as you completely replaced Windows
- rule out 3rd party software (if the problem continues, it's not a 3rd party software problem as you didn't install any 3rd party software)
- so, if the problem continues, it must be a hardware problem.

OTOH, if the problem stops, then it was either a Windows or 3rd party software problem.  If the problem doesn't come back, then you've fixed it.  Then all that remains is setting the computer back up the way that you'd like it and importing your data from the backup you made.
