Are security updates the main reason to buy a new phone?

I have a Galaxy S5 which got a security update in October 17.

I want to keep this as long as it is secure but would like to know when I should upgrade.

The new scuttlebutt is you don't need a high end phone to get a good phone.

I was looking at the Android One phone and the Moto z 2. Which would you recommend?

lastly, Pixel 2 or IPhone 10?
