Hi.  First time poster.  I just registered tonight, and am posing the same exact question I did on my usual favorite tech support site, since no one seems to be answering in the last few days.  Hopefully I’m making this post in the right place, as this seems to be the most appropriate forum I’m able to find.  So anyway…

I’m having a severe slowdown problem with my computer that I want to say started last Tuesday (11/14/17) - when my Firefox browser automatically updated to Quantam (v. 57) – however I felt similar symptoms coming on much longer ago, albeit much more gradually.  Before, I was always able to grit my teeth and grumble, and simply deal with them; now, however, I’m practically pulling my hair out, as this “new and improved” browser version seems to have dragged my computer virtually to a halt.  According to Task Manager, having the new Firefox browser open – even for a few seconds – sends CPU Usage rocketing to 100%, and there it stays.

The only way I’ve been able to get around the problem and have a semi-workable computer again is to restart Firefox in “Safe Mode” (i.e. without any extensions or Add-ons).  And unfortunately this is only a “somewhat”-improvement; CPU Usage eventually creeps back up and my machine gets bogged down again.

Now, it may not be entirely fair for me to pin this entirely on Firefox.  Symptoms have been similar (although not *quite* as bad) when I’ve tried using Internet Explorer instead.  Since similar symptoms were occurring across both browsers, I began to think I might have a computer virus.  Both Malwarebytes and my Webroot antivirus software seem to say my computer is clean, though.  (And, as a footnote, this same behavior is manifesting itself on another family member’s [same house] computer, also with the same antivirus software that has turned up nothing.)  I run CCleaner regularly as well; and the system claims that C (my only internal drive) is 0% fragmented.

Is it possible that some other underlying problem (e.g. registry) is to blame?  Should I seriously consider formatting and then reinstalling my Operating System?  I’d like to save that as a last resort, although I’m really aching to have my computer restored to normal working order.

Thanks, in advance, for any and all advice that anyone has to offer!

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

If you are told that you no problems according to what you were told to do, then if you are interested in an alternative to Firefox, there may be good suggestions in the topic, https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/664116/most-popular-browser-for-vista/

Thank you both for your replies.  In the meantime, I've been able to alleviate much of the problem with Firefox being for all practical purposes unusable, with the help of an article I found through a Google search.  Again, I’m not the most savvy person when it comes to the inner workings of computers – but In a nutshell, it had to do with “multiprocesses” running in my browser that were apparently incompatible with the latest version of Firefox when it automatically updated.  So an option needed to be changed in about:config.

However, it seems I still can't have Firefox open very long before the Memory usage swells to over 2.6 GB; simple cut & paste operations or opening a folder in Explorer slow to a snail's pace; I have to kill the browser with Task Manager; …and then the cycle starts all over again.  I’m still trying to figure whether any websites that I habitually browse to (and keep open in tabs)

are bigger culprits than others.

So I thank you for your advice and willingness to help.  If you feel that the situation is unchanged and you’d still advise me to follow the procedure that you’ve outlined above, let me know and I will dutifully give them a try.

...And thanks again for responding!

Hi again.  Update on my situation…

I’ve once again been able to use my Firefox browser, but invariably my habit of browsing to certain sites and keeping those tabs open tend to gobble up my computer’s resources and slow normal operations to a painful crawl, making it necessary to kill Firefox and start over again.  It seems to me that the biggest culprits are those with what I might call “rich” format, or info that updates automatically (such as Streaming, I guess).  I’ve seen this to happen after I open sites such as Yahoo Finance, Facebook, and YouTube.  Since this appears to be a common element, would it be naïve of me to think there might be some hidden process (like a Plugin, perhaps) that needs updating updating and might remedy things for me.

…As another side note, very often when I go to shut my computer down at the end of the day, it takes its sweet time and eventually displays the popup error alerting me that “Task Host Window” is taking a[n extra] long time to close.

Do these tidbits happen to provide any clues or provoke any new thoughts?  Thanks.

Hi.  I’ll gladly perform your second suggestion when I get a free moment this evening.  For now, though, I can report that the value I changed was

browser.tabs.remote.autostart

It was set at True; I changed it to False.

As I said, I plan on getting back to you shortly…

Looks to me as if you may have a hard drive problem.  Please download/install/run the long diagnostic on SeaTools For Windows Download - http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/ .  Do not post/copy the results...just tell us if the internal hard drive passes or fails.

Louis

Hi.  Thanks for your response.  Too late in the day for that, but I will try that at my next convenient opportunity and get back to you.

OK, I downloaded SeaTools.  Then I ran the Short DST (Drive Self Test).

…It came back with a PASS, so unfortunately no smoking gun there.

Should I try any of the other tests?  (Fix All; S.M.A.R.T. Check; Drive Information; Short Generic; Long Generic; Advanced Tests)  I’m a bit hesitant, since it recommended backing up my data first.

Looking forward to your reply!

*** EDIT: I just reread your post; I'll try the Long Generic (I assume that's the option you meant) and get back to you!  It looks rather lengthy, so I will start it later and let it run overnight...

OK, I ran the Long Generic overnight...  The result was a PASS.

Interested to know whether you have any further suggestions as to what to try next.

Thanks.

This is not a powerhouse computer, how many Tabs are you running?

You may need more RAM at least to handle lot's of tabs being open.  I'm pretty sure you can put another 4GB Chip in there?  Also, the CPU Probably cannot handle, lot's of heavy usage, it's not bad, but some expect to much.  I see folks with way to many tabs open all the time.

Windows 7 Professional (SP1) 64-bit

Dell Inspiron 660

Intel Pentium CPU G2020 2.90 GHz

4.00 GB RAM

If it were me, would not mess with Firefox settings unless you know what you are doing.

What kind of Install was this?

Did you install it yourself with a Retail Disk and get all the drivers yourself?  Or did you use an OEM Recovery, did the OS come with the pc etc.

Error: (11/30/2017 03:39:28 PM) (Source: Disk) (User: )

Description: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR2.

What are you using this Drive for:  Why don't you unplug this drive if it is not needed and Restart the pc and see how it runs.  Then run the sfc /scannow below.

3725GB Western Digital WD My Passport 25E2 USB Device (USB (SATA)):

Would you please provide the exact Model #  Is it a US Model?

What does "Device Manager" look like.  Open it and see if there are any Driver Errors, if so post back a pic or some info of some kind.

The run a sfc /scannow to see if that will fix or report any problems, and we'll go from there.  I don't have lot's of technical experience but will try to give a little assistance till someone else comes along.

Truthfully...I'd like to know just what "signs" you have seen of a possible hard drive problem...after you seemed to be in denial of such with your assertion that the drive passed the suggested diagnostic.

You did not seem convinced by the fact that Windows was recording hard drive controller problems.

For the record...anything installed on a hard drive which has problems...is subject to not run/function properly.  That means Windows, programs, data files...and browsers.  If you merely had a browser problem...that should be solveable by using a different browser...or uninstalling/reinstalling said browser (if it were damaged).

And, of course, there is always the possibility of malware.  This is not the forum for assessing situations that have a malware aspect.  If you suspect such, I suggest posting in the Am I infected forum (link in my signature).

FWIW:  I use Firefox with my XP install...your Speccy snapshot reflects abnormal memory usage for the CSRSS and the Firefox services.  Such can be an indication of malware.

Louis
