Hello, for some time my websites have been loading slowly, and I wonder if I might have a virus of some kind.  I use Windows 7, and generally use Firefox as a browser (just updated to 57 but problem was occurring before that).  I would appreciate any kind of diagnostic help!

Use the programs below to clean, remove adware and remove malware.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the

Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.

After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Malwarebytes - Clean Mode

  • Download and install the free version of Malwarebytes
Note: If you have Malwarebytes already installed, you don't need to install it again. Simply start from the next bullet point
  • Once Malwarebytes is installed, launch it and let it update its database. You might have to click on the little arrow by Scan Status in the middle right pane for it to do so
  • Once the database update is complete, click on the Scan tab, then select the Threat Scan button and click on Start Scan
  • Let the scan run, the time required to complete the scan depends of your system and computer specs
  • Once the scan is complete, make sure that the first checkbox at the top is checked (which will automatically check every detected item), then click on the Quarantine Selected button
    • If it asks you to restart your computer to complete the removal, do so
  • Click on Export Summary after the deletion (in the bottom-left corner) and select Copy to Clipboard. Paste the content in your next reply

If you are unable to run a scan using MBAM:

Follow the instructions in the thread below. Make sure to download the MBAR linked in it. Let me know if you're not able to launch it and run a scan.

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop. (compatible with Windows 7, 8 and 10)

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Download and run the FREE online scanner from Free Virus Scan | Online Virus Scan from ESET | ESET

  • Place a checkmark in YES, I accept the Terms of Use, then click Start. Wait for ESET Online Scanner to load its components.
  • Select Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications.
  • Click Advanced Settings, then place a checkmark in the following:
    • Remove found threats
    • Scan archives
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Click Start to begin scanning.
  • ESET Online Scanner will start downloading signatures and scan. Please be patient, as this scan can take quite some time.
  • When the scan is done, click List threats (only available if ESET Online Scanner found something).
  • Click Export, then save the file to your desktop.
  • Click Back, then Finish to exit ESET Online Scanner.

Post the three lists mentioned below using CCleaner.

Open CCleaner and click on Tools. Choose Startups. On that page you will see a list of Windows Startups and at the top tabs for each browser and Scheduled Tasks.

At the bottom right of that page you will see a button when clicked will allow you to Copy and Paste the list of Windows Startups and Scheduled Tasks into your next

post. Please do that.

Open CCleaner and click on Tools. Choose Uninstall. On that page you will see a list of programs installed on your computer and at the bottom right of that page you

will see a button when clicked will allow you to Copy and Paste that list in your next post. Please do that.

Thanks, Malwarebytes and ADWCleaner found nothing.  The CCleaner worked well, although I had to uncheck some programs that I want to keep, and it did mess up my Firefox URL drop down menu.  ESET always runs a bit wonky for me, getting stuck if it detects a potentially unwanted application, so I unchecked that and also unchecked scan archives as that tends to get stuck as well. Here is the ESET list, with identifying information removed:

C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Downloaded program setups\ccsetup537.exe    Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Google.D potentially unsafe application    cleaned by deleting
C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Downloaded program setups\spsetup130.exe    Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Google.D potentially unsafe application    cleaned by deleting

Here are the three CCleaner lists.  Although I might be missing something, there is nothing there that I want to remove (except CCleaner itself when finished with this post):

Thanks, it does seem better.  However, I did get a weird website that popped up claiming to have a "critical error" for Firefox and asking for identifying information.  I closed the program and it hasn't returned, but it was quite strange.

Would like to know what website that was.

Did you uninstall Real Networks?

Check the Extensions and plugins for Firefox and if there are any you don't recognize let me know what they are.

With 57 being installed....many add-ons were not activated because they were not compatible as you may already know. You may

see Real Networks. If so, Disable or Remove/ Delete if you uninstalled it.

There were numerous Setup.exe Tasks that you Disabled. After rebooting and running for a day or two with no consequences to

Disabling those....go back and choose to Delete those instead of just Disabling them.

Block third party cookies from installing in Firefox. Those are ad and tracking cookies. Once blocked...run CCleaner and allow it

to remove the existing third party cookies from Firefox and Flash. How to disable third-party cookies in all major web browsers

If you don't have an ad blocker installed I suggest you install Adblock Plus. Adblock Plus :: Add-ons for Firefox

Once it is installed...click on the ABP icon and choose options. Then UNcheck the box next to Allow Acceptable Ads.

Thanks, I do not see any unrecognized add-ons, and I do have Ad Blocker.  There was an extension that I didn't recognize but seems safe:  Widevine Content Decryption Module provided by Google Inc.  I did uninstall everything connected with the Real Player.

Here are the websites where the phony critical error occurred:

Just prior to that I was looking at these websites:

I suggest you keep CCleaner and run it occassionally to clean out the computer. You can change settings in Firefox to

delete the cache and other items such as history when closing Firefox.

I get a 404 message when clicking on those first two links. So, I don't know what those represent. A search was no help, either.

How much RAM is installed? Though 57 is said to use less memory than previous editions of Firefox.

It could be the multi-processor configuration causing the slowness. See info for disabling that in link below.

I take it that you did not do a clean reinstall of Firefox.

2 firefox.exe running in the background whenever I open Firefox | Firefox Support Forum | Mozilla Support

QUOTE:

This could indicate that your Firefox is using a new "multiprocess" feature.

e10s

One of the headline changes in Firefox 48+ is e10s, which separates the browser interface process from the page content process. The performance impact of this can vary a lot between systems: many users find it faster, some find it slower, for many it's neutral. There probably is somewhat more memory use than when everything runs in a single firefox.exe process.

Are you using e10s?

You can check whether you have this feature turned on as follows. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, check the row for "Multiprocess Windows" and see whether the number on the left side of the fraction is greater than zero. If so, you are using e10s.

If you are using e10s:

If you think Firefox is not performing well or is using an unreasonable amount of resources now, you could evaluate whether e10s is causing this problem by turning it off as follows:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste autos and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 preference to switch the value from true to false

Note: the exact name of the preference may vary, but it will start with browser.tabs.remote.autostart

At your next Firefox startup, it should run in the traditional way. Any difference?

Thanks, I have 4 GB of RAM.  Firefox is not running the multiprocess feature.  It seems to be working fine now, thanks again!
