Hi,

a couple of years ago I left a company and they allowed me to take my work laptop with me.

However the administrator rights are still with their administrator

including the update function - i recieve this error message

8024402C error

your received updates - managed by administrator.

anyway of fixing this???

The laptop itself is fine SSD etc so i have no need to update it.

I don't have any original discs so Im uncertain what to do.

A reboot would involve lots of reloads of software - and the laptop doesn't have a hard drive!

Any ideas??????????????

heres the details;

If you have a system which has a valid license for Windows use...which belongs to a corporate/business entity...then you need to install a valid license in your own name...if you want to use it as a personal computer unlelated to said business/organization.

Is there some reason in Bleeping Computer that if somebody gets gifted a free laptop from their workplace (or anyplace) that person is not supposed to get help with their computer issues?

Are folks like that not supposed to get help unless they procure and install a new version of Windows?

If you've had the laptop for a couple years is this the first time you are attempting to perform a Windows Update?

The Windows installation is Windows 7 Pro with what appears to be a retail product key (which you should edit out of your original post).

I don't see anything about administrator or managed by administrator on a Windows Update screen like this:

There is a different issue where you might be seeing some Windows Update messages like this:

[attachment=199886:1.jpg]

Often accompanied by a message like this:

[attachment=199887:2.jpg]

These are two separate issues with two separate potential solutions and should be addressed separately one at a time.

Are you seeing one of those, both of those, none of those or something else?

This is a licensing issue.  If this company used a volume license, which I would expect for financial and compatibility issues, the new owner will not be able to make any changes since the acmin. account is still under control from the company.  I would be willing to guess that the OP can't even download and install programs of their choice.

If the company did use a volume license then there is the possibility that the OP can wipe the drive and do a fresh installation of this version of Windows 7.  This would depend on whether the COA product code is still on the bottom of the laptop.  If it is they should be able to activate the installation with that code.  They can use a program like Darik's Boot and Nuke to wipe (overwrite) the hdd.  There is a tutorial which may be useful, it can be found here.

A ISO file for Windows 7 download is still available here

The points I have made re proper licensing...still remain valid, IMO.

In that case you can legally download Windows 8.1 directly from Microsoft

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8

Make sure you download the same Edition that is listed on the Windows 8 logo it need to match or Windows activation will fail.

For Windows Pro the machine need to have a logo like this:

mfLn1NqoqQ6De8erkUXOF0w.jpg

During install when it ask for a key simply press Skip or the option to input the key latter, Windows 8.1 will auto activate when the machine gets access to the internet and connect to the Microsoft activation servers. The information needed to activate is stored on the machine BIOS/UEFI.

its a brown windows 8 logo.

so i assume its worth doing this - transfer all may data to a external storage and load windows 8?

surely a new 10 would be better? or can i upgrade for free from my 8 to 10? or just persevere with the lack of updates?

opinions would be great im uncertain on the benefots of the change just know that the older it gets - and the fewer updates I do the more likely it is to fall over at some point

sorry never upgraded a pc - usually give up and get a new one but this laptop is actually really nice!!

Questions re installing any version of Windows other than Windows 7...probably need to posted as new topics in the appropriate BC forum for said O/S.

We focus on Win 7 in this forum...and it appears to me that you have no valid license to install/run Win 7.

Excerpt from BC Forum Rules:  "No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures. If a user persists and/or the activity is obviously illegal the staff reserves the right to remove such content and/or ban the user. This would also mean encouraging the use or continued use of pirated software is not permitted, and subject to the same consequences."

That being the case, this topic is now closed.  Feel free to initiate topics in both the Win 8 and Win 10 forums re those O/Ses.  If you have any questions about my actions...please convey such via Personal Message.

Louis
