I have a HP Envy 5646 all-in-one printer.  Its accompanying scanning software, HP Scan and Capture, seems very lightweight in comparison to earlier software, such as HP Solution Center.  I could not select the image alone to scan or choose to scan to .png, for example.  HP Extended Scan was recommended to me but I received the following message when running it: "Scanner communication cannot be established."

I have resorted to using the scanning software in Paint.net for the moment.  I wonder, however, whether anyone has something better to offer.
