I'm an old fart,  Used to teach computer science at Cal Poly SLO.  A physicist friend once said that "Any major that needed to append the word science to their name probably wasn't one".  I hate physicists.  I'm a computer expert that has been so by passed by tech that the only thing I really understand any more is the O No FF switch. Well that's it for now.

Don't give up yet, you've got the basics, now you just need to play a little catch up.  I've concentrated on hardware as a FE it hasn't been easy but once the foundation is set keeping up won't be hard.  The real changes have come from within the chips as more and more peripheral chips are now being added inside the CPU substrate.  More powerful and faster chips with larger OS platforms have allowed for faster ports and plugin cards.  Best of luck.
