I have an extraordinary number of computer problems.  I can't figure out what's going on.  I have three laptops (one is older, another is a newer one to replace it and the third is for work.)

ALL three have issues.

The 'older one' really isn't that old.  I bought it a little over a year ago.  It had a graphics display issue.  I had issues with Lenovo about the warranty period and finally straighten it out last September and in that month, I sent it in for warranty repair twice.  Then the warranty ran out and my problems returned.  Currently I use it offline and it can't save text files, stating that the hard drive cannot be located.

My 'new' computer (Windows 10...the other two are Windows 7) was responding slowly and I took it in for warranty repair.  They replaced the hard drive, the touch pad, and the motherboard.  I had hardly used it.

I do not open links in emails.  I do not install any illegal software and am always vigilant about security.  I don't visit porno or gaming sites.  I don't download movies or music.

The latest problem:

This is a Toshiba laptop, almost two years old. intel i7,  5500 U@2.4 MHz, 12 GB dual channel DDR3 RAM.

Last summer I submitted to a malware cleaning here at Bleeping Computer.  My machine was certified clean.  Immediately following that, I took it to a technician who went through it thoroughly and confirmed that it was functioning properly.

Over the past two months I have experienced three blue screens.  Another time the computer locked up and I could gain back control only by removing the battery.   My most recent problem has been disappearing files.  I created a file the other day, and saved it in a particular directory.  The next day, it wasn't there.  I searched the directory folder and it was not found.  I then did another search, but this time, accessing my full C drive.  I found it and it was listed where I had saved it, but when returned to that folder, it was not there again, though I could access the file directly by clicking on it from the search results.

I needed another file I had created some months back and could not find it anywhere on this computer (I created it on this computer.)  I had back-up on an external HD and as soon as I plugged it in, a msg box popped up that said the drive needed to be scanned and fixed.  I checked OK.  I found the file on the drive and copied it to my computer.  Last summer, I scanned this drive with Malwarebytes and Avast and it was clean.

Earlier yesterday morning I accessed my Yahoo email account attached to my Flickr account.   I had no problem.  I logged out.  This was about an hour earlier than searching for the missing files described above.

Following locating the files on my external HD, I again accessed my Yahoo mail account, but my password (the same one that I had successfully used earlier) failed.  My password is over twenty characters of letters (upper/lower), numbers, and symbols.  I had just changed it less than a month ago.

I don't normally mess with my computer as I am not very techie evolved.  A few days ago I found a solution to disappearing files  on a Microsoft forum describing how to rebuild the indexing.  I did this.   Here is the link:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/random-files-are-disappearing-in-windows-7/21bfbe83-8358-4d42-84e0-6a9e55f1b4e2?auth=1

I ran this a few days ago, before this latest incident of disappearing files.

Any guesses on this?  My computer repair man has no answers.  Please don't hesitate to suggest some offbeat cause.

It's gotten to the point where I cannot depend on computers anymore and it is interfering with my work as I am very computer-dependent for what I do.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Hello Louis.  You have seen me here a number of times.  I have what appears to be a never-ending series of computer issues, and all of my past posts have been part of this same scenario.  It has been a few years since I have had a computer running properly.  I've asked my repairman about these and all he says is that Windows can be quirky.  Yes, I know, but this much?  I have been working with computers since W3.1.

Here is the speccy link:  http://speccy.piriform.com/results/8GHqNxBjCp5z6cgFygSFano

OOPZ - I see that I had a USB stick plugged in.

I see nothing indicating that an external hard drive exists, other than your mentioning it...and errors reflecting mention of a My Passport drive.

I would uninstall both Avast and AVG...and then use MS Security Essentials for a trial period.  I find that neither AVG nor Avast has ever done anything to make me feel that either is superior to MSE...and MSE has far less bloat, IMO.

I would also run the chkdsk /r command on the Windows partition.  I would then follow that with the sfc /scannow command.

After all that...please post updated MTB and Speccy data.

Thanks :).

Louis

I apologize for this delay.  I do not have the internet at home currently.

Before I proceed, I want to express my concern about deleting both Avast and AVG (both programs were recommended by the head of a local computer club.)  I realize that viruses are far less frequent than other forms of malware.  Is MS Essentials really effective?  I ask because this goes against my instincts.

I only had the external hard drive attached to copy one file.   Do you need for me to reattach it and run other tests?

Also, a new strange event just occurred.  While online my browser just scrambled and if I can attach a jpg, I will show you what it did.  I never saw anything like this before.

I will schedule a scan-disk.  I ran one recently.

Thanks.

You should uninstall either avast or AVG. In fact avast purchased AVG and eventually they will be using the same engine.

You should not have two AVs running at the same time. That only causes problems.

Thanks.  I did this on the advice of a 'computer expert.'  Louis:  Can we proceed if I kept AVG for now instead of installing Essentials at this time?

I note that since I had that problem of having problems signing into my Flickr account after I plugged in the external hard drive (I only attach it when to update new files or to retrieve files) that I have issues just about every time now when I sign into Flickr/Yahoo.  I get a Flickr "Bad Panda!" problem screen.  The last one said the problem was related to security issues.   As I noted already, I changed my password to my Flickr account a few weeks before I had the incident with my password not working.   And I had been into that account an hour earlier with no problem.  I had scanned the external hard drive last summer with Avast and MalwareBytes and no issues were detected.

Is there any way to determine what exactly is happening when I log into Flickr and why I am getting these Flckr security warnings?

I uninstalled Avast.  When I rebooted after the uninstall, I got a msg stating that AVG was in passive mode.  I activated it.,

JUST HAD ANOTHER INCIDENT

Just a minute after typing the above, I tried to sign back into my Flickr/Yahoo account and was taken to a screen that asked  me to prove I am not a robot.  It asked me if I had attempted to sign in from an email account I had never seen, and after I performed a verification test was told I couldn't retrieve my account.  I started over and tried another method that asks me to verify my phone online and then sends me a text msg and got back in.

This just happened.

Of course I will AGAIN change my password, but somehow something is messing with my account.  This started up after I plugged in my hard drive and got a msg that it needed to be repaired, as described in my first thread.

Should I do anything to check the external hard drive?  I do not keep it attached to my laptop.

Sorry...I have already suggested the steps that I would have taken were this my system.  The fact that you have error messages indicatmg a corrupt file system...may call for measures more stringent than I suggested.

Thanks Louis.  I don't know what you mean...these more stringent actions.  Please explain.  If you think it is absolutely necessary, I will follow your instructions to the letter, uninstall AVG and install Essentials.  I once had an infection while using Essentials a while back which is why I am leary.

I consider clean installs...or attempts at repair installs...as more stringent that attempting to put band-aids on the computer.

If you attached an external drive only 1 time for a single use...and it resulted in an error citing file corruption on said drive...that situation is ambiguous, at best, IMO.  The drive could have the source of the error...your system may have been the source of the error.

I don't try to tell those asking for help/assistance/suggestions...that anything is necessary.  I try to provide best possible suggestions, based on the way that my brain is working at the moment that I post such.

The problem goes back to my computer, and in fact every computer I've owned over the past 4-5 years.  I reinstalled the OS on this computer a few months ago and am willing to do it again, if that might solve the problem.  But my computer problems do not appear to be confined to this one computer, and not on a single network.

Just this morning I signed into my Flickr account with no problems.  Then an hour later (after signing) tried to sign-in again and I was directed to a very strange page and could not proceed.  I hesitated to click on the link.  It's long and it seems to be about challenging my password.  I did a screen capture and will attach it.

I am really at a loss as to what to do next.  I need a computer for my work and if it's even possible that somehow someone has the ability to get into any computer I own and muck it up...

I am very careful online.  I do not click on links and don't answer email from people I don't know.  I don't game, don't download music, don't visit porno sites, etc.  I have been computing since the early 1990's and never had problems like these.

Can you extract any clues from the attached file that would hint at why my password is being challenged, after using it just an hour earlier?

Last week after doing regular internet activities (email, flickr, etc.) my screen scrambled.  I think I posted that image last week.

I also signed into another Yahoo email acccount today with no problem.

Is this a problem with FireFox perhaps?  Of course, if so that doesn't address the computer issues.

Just after posting the above, I had more internet problems.  I tried to update Firefox to a new version that just came out and the update failed.  I tried a few times.  Then I uninstalled Firefox and was able to reinstall it and sign into my email.  I have some very important legal things going on right now and need access to my email.

Then I got a computer alert (just like I've seen on the YouTube scam videos!) with a voice msg telling me to call a number and if I closed the screen without responding, very bad things would happen to me.  I am attaching a screen capture of that threat.

I will scan my computer right now with malwarebytes.

AND my computer fan is running like crazy.  It's usually in a passive mode.

There is a possibility that yours is a malware situation.  Same/similar problems on multiple computers...that doesn't sound like either hardware or O/S problems to me.

I suggest you open a new topic in the Am I Infected forum.
