Hi there

I have reinstalled windows, and had to choose my ext hdd as an install location because my original C drive in my desktop wasn't there as an option when I installed. This was to do with a complete crash which all recovery attempts failed. Now windows is on the hdd, and it is labeled C but my original drive that windows WAS on, has vanished altogether. When I open msconfig to check the drives, only the new one shows up

I would like to use that HDD as an ext one like it was, and somehow find the original C and put windows back on it

Sounds too much like your original hard drive is failing...to me.  I suggest you run a hard drive diagnostic on it.
