I'm having a problem with repeated blue screens, hangs, etc.  Windows 10 on a Dell XPS Studio PC.  (The box is a few years old and originally came with Win7; I installed a flash drive and put Win10 on it a couple of years ago.)  This has been going on for a number of months, I've seen more than a dozen different stop codes during that time.  Other times, the computer will just freeze or suddenly reboot itself with no BSOD.  And occasionally, it wilI hang during the BSOD!  I can usually reboot back to the desktop and the computer will seem fine for days or weeks, other times it will fail to boot multiple times in a row.

I've tried updating the drivers, Device Manager says they are all up to date; I tried reinstalling the OS, that didn't help.  I've run Windows Update and installed the Fall Creators Update.  I took it over to the Geek Squad who ran a bunch of diagnostics and couldn't find anything wrong.  I don't think I installed any new hardware prior to these events starting, in fact I don't have any unusual hardware installed or attached to this computer.  I use it for only the most basic of tasks - web surfing, Quicken.

Over the last few days the most common problem is the computer just freezing.  I reboot and can't seem to go more than a few minutes of basic activity - web browsing, etc. - before it just becomes unresponsive to any mouse or keyboard input.

Where do I start?

Wait until it freezes again, then recover and immediately generate these 2 sets of reports:

Report Set #1)  Please run this report collecting tool (even though you may not be experiencing BSOD's) so that we can provide a complete analysis: (from the pinned topic at the top of the forum)   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/

If you have problems with it running it, there's an alternate tool here (direct download link):  https://github.com/blueelvis/BSOD-Inspector/releases/download/1.0.5/BSODInspector-1.0.5.exe

NOTE:
Please zip up the (.ZIP) files - do not use .RAR or other compression utilities.
.ZIP is the type file that can be uploaded to the forums.

Report Set #2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on the "Administrative Events" heading
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504
The Event ID 41 error is simply Windows saying that it doesn't know why it shutdown.

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

I didn't find much significant in the Admin logfile.

Most often this is a sign of a hardware problem (although it can be a compatibility issue or a low-level driver problem)>

Please start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

Please finish ALL of them and let us know the results.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version A04) dates from 2010.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.
FYI - W8 and W10 communicate more with the UEFI/BIOS than previous versions of Windows, so it's important to ensure that the UEFI/BIOS is kept up to date (and the outdated UEFI/BIOS' may be the cause of some compatibility issues).  I am very concerned about the age of the BIOS and it's ability to support W10.

Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this version of your OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.  The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.

This device has problems in Device Manager:

MyBookWorld    SWD\DAFUPNPPROVIDER\UUID:2FF543EF-5AEC-7E89-670E-21EC54F530E7    This device cannot start.

Please uninstall it and then check to see that the problem in Device Manager is fixed.
If not, post back here for further suggestions.
Feel free to reinstall a freshly downloaded copy of the latest version of this program (if needed) AFTER we've finished troubleshooting.

These memory dumps are of a relatively rare type (STOP 0x5C:

and may be suggestive of a compatibility issue (as the HAL works between Windows and the BIOS/hardware).

Unfortunately, the only practical way to check this is to install a version of Windows that the system/motherboard was originally designed for.

If the error goes away, then it was most likely a compatibility issue with the system (This could either be the BIOS or something else that's installed - so troubleshoot BEFORE trying this).

Please update these older drivers.  Links are provided in order to assist you with looking up the source of the drivers.
If unable to find an update, please uninstall the program that is responsible for that driver.

DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable!!!:
