Hello.

Is there a command line that will disable/re-enable my mouse in W10?

I run automated tasks at the end of each day, I want to see them working (when I'm present) but don't want anyone using the computer while they're running.

He was providing a suggestion sure not the best but no reason to be rude about it. I didn't find anything in relation to cmd but you can make two .bat files using notepad and place them on the desktop when opened one will disable mouse and the other will re-enable it. You can always get to your desktop with the 'windows+D' key function then cycling through the desktop icons till you get to the one to re-enable it(Steps below)

Steps to disable it:

1. Press 'windows key + R' to open run menu.
2.  Now write 'notepad' in it and press enter. It will open notepad.
3.  Now copy the following codes and paste into the notepad.

@echo off
set key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Mouclass"
set key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Mouclass"
reg delete %key%
reg delete %key%
reg add %key% /v Start /t REG_DWORD /d 4
reg add %key% /v Start /t REG_DWORD /d 4

4.  Press Ctrl+S to save it.
5.  Select, 'All Files' on 'Save as Type' field—- on the save option and save it as 'msd.bat' on the file name and save it in desktop.

It’s approximately done now. The file which you just saved is ready to disable your mouse!

Steps to enable it:

1. Press 'windows key + R' to open run menu. —-> write “notepad” to open note pad.
2. Copy the the following codes and paste into the notepad.

@echo off
set key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Mouclass"
set key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Mouclass"
reg add %key% /v Start /t REG_DWORD /d 1

4.  Save the the file with 'bcamsd.bat' name and extension.
5.  Double click on 'bcamsd.bat' to enable you mouse.
6.  Now you can enable your mouse when you are ready to use it again.

I would strongly recommend against the use of .bat or .reg files to turn the mouse/pointing device on or off.

One can easily disable the mouse in Device Manager and re-enable it there, provided you know how to navigate in Windows with the keyboard.

A far easier solution to the initial problem stated would simply be unplugging the mouse and putting it somewhere inaccessible until you returned.  If it happens to be a wireless mouse it's even simpler to pull the dongle and stash it until you return.  If this is a laptop and mousepad, I'd definitely go the Device Manager route before ever considering using scripts to manipulate the registry.

Devcon looks to be what you're looking for.  The link from the article no longer works, here is a working link.  This is a Microsoft program, so should be as safe to use as Windows. ;-)

'devcon,exe'

works

'devcon,exe disable' produces message

devcon: Invalid use of disable.

For more information type: devcon help disable
...which is ok, I expected that due to being an incomplete command.

devcon list
Shows my list ID's, here's my mouse
HID\VID_0000&PID_0538\6&354275A8&0&0000          : HID-compliant mouse

From here I can't get any variations to work:
devcon disable HID\VID_0000&PID_0538\6&354275A8&0&0000
devcon disable 6&243175
devcon disable *6&243175*

I can't think any other combinations that would differ from what I've tried. Any suggestions or experience with running this?

From the article I linked about Devcon it shows you how to step by step go through it.

devcon find *PID_0538

It should return one matching device found.

If so, your disable command should be:

Disable

devcon disable *PID_0538

Enable

devcon enable *PID_0538

Hi, I haven't tried too hard, however Devcon is well and truly deprecated on win 10. Using the links provided it will not even install on my 64 bit pro win 10 v1709. BTW, PID.s change from boot to boot, so you could easily have unplugged the mouse before doing this.

Maybe change to VID_0000 and see if it works.  This isn't something I've ever done, so I don't have a reference other than the article and the download page.

devcon find *VID_0000

It should return one matching device found.

If so, your disable command should be:

Disable

devcon disable *VID_0000

Enable

devcon enable *VID_0000

From the Micosoft page.

devcon hwids=mouse

I don't know if you could combine that with the disable, ie.

devcon disable hwids=mouse

Thanks for the help everyone. Unfortunately it was "No matching devices found" in all cases. I'm going to try using AutoHotkey to achieve what I need. Because of the differences between a command line and an AHK script, I've posted the topic on the AHK forums with a change in my requirements to suit a AHK script. I'm happy to take any AHK suggests here or there.

Thanks!

How about plugging your mouse into a USB hub that has switches that can be turned off.

Here's an example of what I'm referring to...
