Hi,

I've recently noticed that the Google Search page has reverted to the old layout with the I'm Feeling Lucky and Google Search buttons reappearing without having made any changes to the Search settings.

The pages on my browsers frequently reload and the laptop unexpectedly shows the BSOD and shuts down frequently.

The problem on the iPad frequently reoccurs but is temporarily solved by clearing the website history and disabling Java. Laptop and iPad have been on same network.

It doesn't seem to go away on my laptop.

So far I have tried resetting the router, scanning with Malwarebytes, Zemana, Emsisoft, Roguekiller, TDSKiller, Adw Cleaner and all are coming up clean. Zemana did find 'Hosts Hijack - Too many empty lines in hosts file' and failed to remove it on the first occasion then did not show on the second scan. I've uninstalled Firefox and I'm finding the same problem creep up on IE

Attaching FRST Log.

Please would you kindly assist. Thanks.

Greetings DistressedNovice and :welcome: to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.

My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.

If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that.

===================================================

Ground Rules:
  • First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met.
  • Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
  • Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence.
  • Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.
  • If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
  • When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.
  • I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.
===================================================

Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.

Thank you for your patience thus far.

After running the FRST scan and Addition.txt document should have been created in the C:\Users\Hanifa's children\Downloads folder. Please copy and paste the contents of that report in your reply.

Gary

If I do not reply within 24 hours please send me a Personal Message.

"Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words that give eternal life. We believe, and know that you are the Holy One of God."

Sorry for attaching the file before = laptop keeps overheating and shutting down so found it easier to attach.

All Browsers have been uninstalled except IE. Default browser previously was Firefox (now uninstalled)

Ran Fixlog. Avast moved it to the Virus Chest. Got a log but unable to paste it into message (shows blank when pasted). Zip Log attached.

Ran Gsmart. Got a log but unable to paste it into message (shows blank when pasted)

Laptop still overheating and shutting down randomly.

Greetings.

Before conducting further testing on your hard drive I would like you to back up all of your data including files, photos, music, etc. Once you have completed that (let me know if you need help) we will continue our troubleshooting.

Hi,

Ive not been able to back up all of my data.

Are there any other non-invasive scans that I can run to check these problems are not caused by malware or a DNS issue?

Im starting to question whether the BSOD is due to an overheating fan and Ive checked the Google site on another computer on a different network and it appears the same (with the old layout and buttons) so beginning to wonder if it is not a redirect after all and hopefully just a layout change.

Thanks for your continuing advice.

Greetings.

My priority is always to retain data above all else and that is the reason I suggested you back up your information. Not that it is imminent you risk losing your data, that is usually impossible to predict, but that when there appears to be a red flag we need heed its warning. Ultimately the issue of backing up data is up to you.

Here are the relevant parts of the GSmartControl report:

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 051 Pre-fail Always - 32
191 G-Sense_Error_Rate 0x0032 100 100 050 Old_age Always - 421
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 100 100 034 Old_age Always - 39 (Min/Max 11/49)
220 Disk_Shift 0x0002 100 100 002 Old_age Always - 62

There are 2 issues addressed here. One is the level of damage to the drive itself (5, 191, 220) and the temperature reading (194). It appears at some point your computer experienced a substantial shock resulting in physical damage to the drive. As a result it makes part of the drive unreadable and less reliable in the future. This is where the risk of losing data lies. The temperature reading indicates at the time you ran the program the computer was operating within a normal heat range. Not to say increased demands might not push the temperature into the danger zone, but at the time of running the report the temperature was fine.

There is more we need to address regarding the browser and we can move in that direction, ignoring the implications of the GSmart report, but I need to make sure you understand doing that without backing up the data while we still can comes at a risk.

I am happy to move in either direction. Please let me know your preference.
Gary

Greetings,

The Google Search Page layout change is not indicative of malicious software. The layout is controlled by Google and I have the same thing you are describing. In addition, some web pages automatically refresh after a certain period of time. Are you being redirected to any suspect sites when navigating to a known site?

The BSOD's appear to be related to your networking driver rather than overheating. We are going to gather some additional information I need. I would like to run a more thorough hard drive test to get a second opinion. Please do this.

===================================================

Farbar's MiniToolBox

--------------------
  • Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop
  • Please close any Firefox browsers you may have open
  • Double click the icon to launch the program
  • Make sure only the following options are checked:

Flush DNS
Report IE Proxy Settings
Reset IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
Reset FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries

  • Click Go and once the scan is completed a MTB.txt Notepad document will open on your desktop
  • Please copy and paste the contents in your reply
===================================================

Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows

-------------------

Note: This process may take several hours to complete.
  • Download Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows and save it to your desktop
  • Unzip the file onto your desktop
  • Right click on setup and select Run as Administrator
  • Click Next three
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish to launch the program
  • Close all screens except for the Western Digital Diagnostics screen
  • Place a check mark in I accept this License Agreement then click Next
  • Left click on your Western Digital (or other brand main) hard drive
  • Just above that link click on the small icon where it says Click to run tests
  • Select EXTENDED TEST then click Start
  • Once completed you will be notified whether the hard drive passed or failed
  • Please copy and paste that information in your reply
===================================================

Things I would like to see in your next reply. Please be sure to copy and paste any requested log information unless you are asked to attach it. :thumbsup2:
  • Redirects?
  • MTB.txt
  • Hard drive results?

Hi,

Redirects - none. Its reassuring that you have the same Google Search layout as I was misled by this thread on Google https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/websearch/MM0T6mrV2VU;context-place=topicsearchin/websearch/Reverted%7Csort:date

MTB log - do not have laptop on hand at the moment so cannot post log but it seemed to have successfully reset settings. The Hosts file was empty - is that normal?

Diagnostics result - Pass

The BSOD has not appeared for a few days and the laptop is not whirring as crazily as it was.

Thanks for your continuing guidance.
