This popup tries to get me to update Adobe Flash Player. I starts with a warning page with the heading "Your Version of Flash Player May Be Outdated". Then a second popup appears with buttons to "Update" or "Save File". A screenshot should be attached.

I initially thought this was legitimate, and clicked on "Update". However, my antivirus caught it, and nothing was downloaded, as far as I know. At that point I realized the Flash Player logo was obviously fake.

Oddly, it seems I get this popup only while I'm on the www.foxnews.com website, which I look at multiple times each day. I have not seen it any other time.

The result of the FRST.txt scan is here:

Greetings Mike and :welcome: to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.

My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.

===================================================

Ground Rules:
  • First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met.
  • Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
  • Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence.
  • Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.
  • If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
  • When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.
  • I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.
===================================================

Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.

Thank you for your patience thus far. Please allow me just a bit of time to review what you have posted.

Edited by Oh My!, 05 November 2017 - 03:14 PM.

Hello, Gary. Thanks very much for your help with this. It's less of an emergency than a nuisance, but I'd like to get it resolved.

To answer your browser question, I use Chrome exclusively on Windows 7 (by choice), Version 62.0.3202.75 (Official Build) (64-bit).

The ADWCleaner document is here:

Computer Performance: I just clicked on multiple links on the Fox News website, and after about 6 links, I again got the popup from softwarecentraldownload.com. It's basically the same as before, except instead of asking me to update Flash, it starts out "Dear Comcast Cable user" and says I need to update my "software and browser". I could send a screenshot, but I don't see a way to attach it. Other than that persistent popup, performance seems to be fine.

My pleasure to help.

How is your computer/browser behaving?

Thanks for the update.

Try visiting the web site another web browser(s). Let me know if the same thing happens.

Well, I tried it with Explorer, and could not replicate the problem. I have to say, I REALLY don't want to switch from Chrome. I've tried numerous other browsers, and Chrome works best by far for me. Any other way to get at this popup problem? Could it somehow be a Fox News issue? That doesn't seem likely, but it seems to be the only place I've run into it so far. I suppose it may show up elsewhere in time. I'm kind of at a loss here.

There is no need to abandon Chrome.

Let's do some troubleshooting with chrome. Please do this.

===================================================

Launching Chrome Incognito

--------------------
  • Press the Windows Key + R at the same time
  • Type in chrome --incognito and press Enter
  • Check the browser behavior
===================================================

Things I would like to see in your next reply. Please be sure to copy and paste any requested log information unless you are asked to attach it. :thumbsup2:

I was unable to get the offending popups to appear while running Chrome incognito.

OK, now do this.

===================================================

Manually Troubleshooting Google Chrome Extensions

--------------------
  • Launch Chrome normally
  • In the address bar type chrome://extensions and press Enter
  • Uncheck any checked items
  • Enable one extension at a time, restart Chrome and check the performance
  • Identify and report any plugins or extensions causing problems

Before I started unchecking extensions (I use about 6 of them in Chrome), I spent about an hour clicking links within the Fox News website, where the popup seems to have been prevalent. I just wanted to get another look at the popup before I started. I did not get the popup even once during that entire time. So, I'm not sure what's going on. Is there still a reason to do the exercise of removing extensions? Could one of the previous steps you had me take have removed it? I hate to close this topic for fear that the popup will show up again, but now I'm not seeing it. Sorry for the confusion.

Greetings.

No need to be sorry and "confusing" results are expected at times.

It is possible starting Chrome Incognito resolved an issue but we need to give it some time before coming to that conclusion. Use your browser normally for a day and if you see a popup you can work through the troubleshooting steps.

Gary -

The troublesome popup has not returned, so I see no reason to keep this topic open any longer. If it should reoccur, I'll start a new thread.

I thank you very much for your patience and assistance. I appreciate it.

Mike
