The web drops out at odd times anywhere from 3mins. to 3hrs. after logging on. I get either "secure connection has failed " or "the connection has timed out" error. I always find the same 5 errors in Event Viewer. One is aswRdr,Rvrt,Snx,SP and Vmm drivers failed to load at startup. The other is StarOpen service failed to start-can't find file. The other 3 have to do with Avast anti virus which I don't use anymore. They are all under Service Control Manager. I use 1 browser mainly- an old version of Firefox. Search engine is Google and Yahoo. My internet provider indicator and my computer say I am connected but when I try to ping Google it says I'm not and so does Mini tool box  Even when every thing works ok Google only returns 2 or 3 of the 4 packets Mini Tool Box sends  sometimes. Mini Tool Box always pings 127.0.0.1 and it is always good. I don't know what that is though. I have LocalNet dialup service. Thanks once again

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Download AutoRuns and do a search for avast. Uncheck anything avast. If the computer operates normally after a reboot you can highlight each entry and click the red X to permanently remove.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns

You should look for the following

aswRdr
aswRvrt
aswSnx
aswSP
aswVmm

You can also look for a service called StarOpen and uncheck it.

I already had MiniToolBox,Speecy and Autoruns even. I unchecked everything Avast (9 entries) and Star Open. Computer screwed up when I first logged on today but hasn't since- figures. All entries in Autoruns said file not found. One other bit of info. I will see "connection timed out" error in the body of downloaded pages sometimes and this has been happening for a long time. Hope this does the trick. I will get back to you when I get some results. thanks again

I see no indication of a problem with network connectivitty.

Running 1GB RAM can be done...but the system should run out of resources fairly quickly...meaning that more RAM would be an improvement.

You have Avast and Panda both installed, which typically may create problems.  I suggest uninstalling both, using the tools provided by the the program developer (if such exist).  I would then install one or the other and update same...then run a complete system scan.

Ive tried to uninstall Avast with their uninstaller-didn't work. New version won't work either. Unchecking Avast related files using  Autoruns didn't help. Panda seems to work OK. thanks yet again

Your still getting internet dropouts? Have you tried reinstalling your network adapter drivers?

Another option is to download Windows Repair and check the box next to Network Repair. Only check that box, no others.
