I have been trying to run combofix on WinXP SP3. When I run it, combofix tells me that recovery console is not installed or needs updated.   The recovery console IS installed and there is no update for recovery console in winXP.   I have used combofix on this computer in the past and did not have this problem.    So, my question is this: Does the latest update of combofix no longer support Win XP?

Thanks for your time

Windows XP is supported.

System requirements for ComboFix are provided in the Authorized How to guide, on the authorized download page, and in the ComboFix usage, Questions, Help? - Look here topic.

At this time ComboFix can only run on the following Windows versions:
Windows XP (32-bit only)
Windows Vista (32-bit/64-bit)
Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit)
Windows 8 (32-bit/64-bit)

If you need individual assistance with a malware infection or issues related to using ComboFix, please follow the instructions in the Preparation Guide For Requesting Help starting at Step 6.
  • If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
  • In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.
When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team Experts.

I went to the "How to" guide.  I followed the instructions and attempted to reinstall microsoft recovery console.  I got a popup telling me that setup could not continue because the version on my computer is newer that the version on the cd. (cd is xp pro pre service pack 1)

Just for fun, I tried running combofix again, because I figured that it had been updated at least once since the last time I tried running it. Again, combofix indicated that recovery console was either not present (yes, it actually is present) or needed to be updated. I clicked to let combofix install/update  the recovery console. I got a popup from combofix telling me that I am not connected to the internet. Yeah, I am connected to the internet.

For some reason, combofix can't see that the recovery console is installed and can't find my internet connection. Kind of weird.

I have not used ComboFix on an XP system in years so I can't check out the latest version. You can contact and ask the developer (suBs) by posting a topic at Tech Support Forums so he can investigate.
