I have a Windows XP machine that starts normally but will lock up (100% CPU) every few minutes.

This happens even when no applications are running, other than Task Manager.

It happened suddenly, so I suspect there may have been a virus attack.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Open task manager and look at the process that is using all the CPU. I will probably svchost. If you are not using the registry hack to make the computer be detected as POSReady for security updates till 2019 then open services.

Right click Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services. Look for Auto Update Service. Double click. In the dropdown box select Disable then Apply.

Do this right after a reboot as the Auto Update service has a delayed start. This will make it easier to do the steps as you will not be fighting the 99% CPU usage.

There are no registry "hacks".

I have no idea what you are referring to as "POSReady.

Task Manager cannot display the process that is consuming all of the CPU as it is also stalled when the computer "locks" or "hangs".

Reboot the computer and do the steps I provided. Disable the Auto Update Service.

I have had "auto updates" turned off for awhile.

I do not see anything in the "services list" that looks like it has to do with "auto updates".

Might it be called something else?

I will need to boot up my old XP computer and check. Give me a bit. But if you have Auto Updates turned off I believe this disables the service.

Edit: The Service is called Automatic Updates

Thanks for checking.

That service does NOT appear in the list of services.

I am at a loss as to why you do not have this service. If you boot to Safe Mode do you still get the same slowdown? Edit; I will be out for about a half hour.

I definitely don't have "Automatic Updates" in my list of services.

I have not tried booting into "Safe Mode", but this problem does seem to come and go.

At the moment, after rebooting as you suggested, I do not seem to be getting the "lock" up.  However, based on recent experience, I'm confident that it will return

Are there any products that we can run to help to diagnose the problem?

Thanks!

Download Speccy and publish a report per this guide. Post the URL.

Download Minitoolbox and check List last 10 event view problems and Installed programs.

What do you use as a Security Suite?

As an FYI, I do not have this machine connected to my network or the internet at this time.  It is rarely connected as I only use it for Word Processing and Spreadsheet purposes.

Because you cannot run Speccy, run Minitools again, only check Users, Partitions, and Memory Size. Post the log.

I recommend you do not use this computer for banking or internet purchases. There are many out of data programs. What do you use this computer for and can you give the complete model number or serial number of the Compaq.

Is a complete reinstall an option for you if you can back up your personal data and browser bookmarks?

In addition to the above download Seatools for Windows and do the short test first. If that passes do the long test.

Before running Seatools run TFC and clean your temp files.

This is a very old Compaq machine, as you have surmised.

It is a Presario 5000

I only use it for Word Processing and Spreadsheet purposes, it is RARELY connected to the Internet.

I realize that many programs are old and out-of-date.

The Seatools link in your previous message does not work.

I am hesitant to run TFC as the postings on the download site seem to indicate a variety of problems with the software.

Also, when we are finished with all of this, will we be able to cleanly uninstall any of these tools that actually install themselves, rather than just run from the USB jump drive?

Here is the Minitools log:

Here is the link for Seatools.

https://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/seatools-win-master/

TFC only removes temp files. If you do not want to do this then use CCleaner and only use it for cleaning Firefox cache and temp files. You can also Select Run in the XP search box and type %temp%. This is a temp folder where all files can be removed.

2 Drive c: () (Fixed) (Total:13.98 GB) (Free:0.92 GB) NTFS

The above is a problem.  I believe the reason you cannot run programs is because you are out of free space. The partition for Windows is very small and you have no free space left. Please post a snapshot of Disk Management. I see partition 2 and 3 but not one. Right click Computer > Manage > Disk Management. In XP I believe pressing Alt + Prnt Screen will print the active window which you can paste into Paint, save as a Jpg then attach the image.

There are programs you can remove if you do not go on the internet. What device do you use for internet normally?

When I tried to paste the image into this message I received an error stating that I couldn't do that, as I tried to "post" the message. Is there another way to attach it for you?

I have access to several other computers that I use for Internet access.

As to the small amount of free space on the drive, this has been the case on this machine for a long time due to the relatively small drive.  The problem with 100% CPU  is a new one, even though there has been only about 1GB of free space for as long as I can remember.

The problem is not that I cannot run programs, it is that when running them, they will "freeze" (and "un-freeze") as the CPU goes to 100% for several minutes and then returns to a normal level.  Clearly some process is using all of the CPU, but only periodically.

Are you wanting to delete the files in the temp folder simply to free up additional space?
