let me know if i posted in the wrong topic.

I built my computer with some help from a friend who was a hard core gamer, and it worked for several months. Out of the blue, the computer restarted and after the windows logo it gave a black screen. at first it happened occasionally, and another restart would fix it. Now I can't get my screen to show anything at all without going into safe mode and disabling the graphics driver. I have had this problem for months, because I would change or tweak something and it would work again, and then the black screen would rear its ugly head again after a few days. I've run out of things I can try. I don't know what to do. I don't have money to buy a graphics card and don't want to do so if I can't prove without a doubt it will fix the problem.

computer specs:

  • windows 10 pro 64-bit, installed during the free upgrade period. was previously window-8 (problem didn't start until several months after upgrading)
  • intel pentium g620 @ 2.60 GHz (sandy bridge)
  • 8.00 GB single-channel DDR3 @ 668 MHz
  • motherboard - ASUS Z77-A
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 (superclock, from evga. The current one, which is what I'm having all these problems on, is actually a replacement shipped to me when the first one I got had a dead red color channel)
  • 74GB seagate SATA hard drive (ST380023AS), on which windows is installed
  • 931 GB seagate SATA hard drive (ST1000DM003-1CH162), used for storage, games, and art programs
  • realtek high definition audio (no dedicated sound card)
  • I also use a wireless keyboard and mouse, because this is the 21st century and the only wire I want to deal with is my headphones

symptoms:

  1. on computer restart, the windows logo will appear. when the login screen should appear, I get a black screen with a movable cursor. right clicking, and keyboard buttons do nothing.
  2. after forcing the computer into system recovery by hitting the power button during boot up a few times, I can get into safe mode, which works like normal. over time, I found out I could get the screen to work in normal mode by disabling the graphics driver and restarting.
  3. at first, i could re-enable the graphics card in normal mode, and have about a 50% chance my screen would return after the momentary blackout while switching drivers, otherwise i had to repeat steps 1 and 2 until it did. Now it doesn't work at all.
  4. right now. I can only use windows generic drivers or safe mode, which basically means any program that requires a dedicated card won't work (games, videos, high-end digital artwork)

things I've tried, which have either done nothing or given a few days or relief:

  1. restarting the computer. this worked at first. now it doesn't
  2. installing new drivers. sometimes new drivers worked. sometimes they didn't. if they did work, it only lasted until the next restart. using this trick on the same driver twice only rarely worked.
  3. installing drivers that were outdated by a few months. same effect.
  4. using third party programs to sweep the computer clean of every driver file on the computer, and reinstalling the latest driver. these usually lasted until restart
  5. reseating the graphics card. no effect
  6. moving the graphics card to a different port. strangely fixed an infinite hang on start up that I was occasionally dealing with (and also temporarily solved by disabling the graphics driver), and also when my computer restarted after moving the card, the graphics driver was running and working properly, even though I had disabled it before shutting it down. 3 days later my computer BSOD'ed and the black screen was back at startup. (watchdog violation. I don't know enough about debugging with dmp files to figure out the cause, but I strongly suspect it was the video driver, because what else would it be.) (do the ports behave differently? i would think my gamer friend would say something about it being in the wrong one after the several times he examined my progress putting it together)
  7. changing monitors (even used a tv), cables, which ports they were plugged into, switched between dvi, vga and hdmi, used incorrect cables with convertors, etc. every option of this type has been exhausted. none had any effect.
  8. updating BIOS, tweaking various BIOS settings
  9. disabling fast restart, which a few websites suggested. no effect
  10. switching my graphics card with my sister's (which is exactly the same because I bought them together). her card behaved the same way. (i didn't try to run her computer with my card. if her card didn't fix anything on my computer, I didn't want to risk my card breaking anything on her computer)
  11. running anti virus software. (i use malwarebytes exclusively. nothing else I've found has been able to compete with it and I haven't had a single problem cleaning up anything since I started using it) my computer is virtually always clean.
  12. using windows event viewer. I have searched through it with a fine-toothed comb. I have looked for a solution to every error. I've fixed probably 95% of them. none have had any effect. (the last few require things like editing registry etc, while the error generated was minor at best. or were vastly complicated and related to more technical things that i didn't understand well enough to feel comfortable tampering with)
  13. using system configuration to create a boot log. I'm not good at reading it, but the couple of errors on it seemed minor and the solutions vastly complicated.
  14. checked hardware for errors. as best as I can tell, there are no hardware problems.
  15. restart from last know working configuration. this never works, and I'm pretty sure it's because the black screen is considered a working configuration. (windows is still running in the background, waiting for me to put in my password. occasionally i can blindly click the password box and type it in. I know it worked because the little loading circle appears next to the cursor for a few seconds while everything loads.)
  16. monitoring computer temperature. when I'm in BIOS, the computer doesn't seem to monitor temperature very well, with temperatures measured above 70C, even though the computer's been off a couple of hours and I can stick my hand in and touch everything without getting second degree burns. with windows running I can pull up piriform's Speccy to check occasionally and nothing is ever out of a healthy range. (does each part monitor temperature separately? what kind of effect would a faulty thermostat even have?)
  17. asking my friend who helped me build the computer. He didn't have any ideas that I didn't already try
  18. asking my uncle (who is an IT who is very good at his job) to look at it. he helped with a couple of more complicated ideas, and helped update the BIOS (which i was having issues with), after upgrading and tweaking a few things, he got it to work temporarily, but it only lasted until next restart) he agreed it was unlikely the card was broken if my sister's card had the same behavior.

a few things i haven't tried, and why:

  1. resetting windows. I've tried several times, but after it installing the final restart always hangs infinitely. I've even given it several days once before hitting the power button, which always triggers windows to undo changes and leaves me where I started.
  2. a few websites recommended creating a temperary secondary account on windows. I swear windows makes creating a temporary account is harder than brain surgery. also, black screen starts on pre-login lock screen, so idk if it would help.
  3. system restore. this is a long term problem for which i have found many, many, many short term solutions. in the process I've added a lot of programs and data to my computer. also I'm a dummy and always forget to create a restore point whenever it is working, so the last restore point is not even accessible. I think it's from before I upgraded to windows 10.
  4. an entirely different graphics card (other than my sister's which is the exact same model). I don't have any working ones lying around, and I don't have money to just buy one willy-nilly. seriously, I'm on a tight budget here. If I'm going to buy one, it's because this one literally combusted in the case. I'm not kidding. I'm too stubborn to give up now.

Have I exhausted every last option. or does anybody have any ideas on something else I can try? can I consider myself an expert at computers now after all this work? is there some sort of unknowable incompatibility between the different parts of my computer? Am I just gonna have to suck it up and buy a different card? will a different geforce card work if this one didn't? Is there anyone, anywhere, that will enjoy trying to solve the conundrum that is my sad, pathetic computer so that I don't have to spend more money on it?

Boot into safe mode with networking...and try the following.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

bump. would just like to know if someone is still looking at this.

I just tried a clean boot and re-enabled the graphics driver. still got the black screen with cursor, which required me going into safe mode and disabling it again to see my screen on normal boot. again.

I also attempted another reset and it still got stuck on infinite hang on final boot up. I gave it several hours before hitting the power button, which undoes the changes on next boot. I was hoping that because I solved the other infinite hang that it would work, but apparently this one is caused by something else. If anyone knows of anything that could be tweaked to help a reset along, I would be willing to try again and leave it overnight.

also my BIOS keeps complaining about overclock fail even though I don't have it set up right now. exiting BIOS allows windows to boot as normal with no problems. nothing is overheating and everything appears normal. I cleaned off my cpu fan just in case and reseated it, though there wasn't really much dust on it to begin with. it did make of a few degrees of difference, but as I said before, the temperature was within normal range to begin with.

let me know if i need to supply any more info.

I downloaded and installed furmark to see if I could use it at all. It doesn't recognize that I have a geforce card, I'm assuming because I have the driver disabled, and I can't enable the driver because black screen. Is it possible to enable the driver while keeping the generic driver as top priority, or does that just cause conflicts and more problems than it solves? Of course, if anyone could figure out how to prevent the black screen when enabling the driver would also solve the problem entirely.

Also, my brother in law suggested that it might be the motherboard misbehaving.

as far as i can tell, these are problems i'm having that could suggest motherboard issues:

  1. switching the graphics card to a different port solved an infinite hang on startup that only occurred when the driver was enabled.
  2. BIOS sometimes complains about overclock fail before windows boots up. I have to enter and exit BIOS to trigger windows to boot when this happens, but  there are absolutely zero other signs of overclocking problems (I've never changed any of the settings except for the easy menu's eco, balanced, and turbo settings. switching between these has no effect on how often the error occurs.)

reasons, that as far as i can tell, suggest it isn't the motherboard:

  1. switching the graphics card port solved the infinite hang but didn't solve the black screen with cursor. (both ports share the same very specific fault, but only one of them has another very specific fault? or the shared fault is in some part of the motherboard that both ports are connected to, but the unshared fault was just in the one port? or maybe the infinite hang was just caused by poor seating, even though I had reseated it several times before moving it to the other port? I don't understand enough about how data travels through all the different pieces. :()
  2. As far as I can remember, I've only ever had one BSOD on this machine, which was a few days ago, and although I don't know how to read the dmp files, I'm fairly certain the graphics driver was to blame (screen stuttered and froze, sound replayed the last bit like a really fast beep noise, idk what you call that, for several seconds before BSOD was given). While the driver is disabled, I have not been able to recreate the situation that caused the BSOD.
  3. computer doesn't beep or make any strange noises or behave strangely before, during, or after boot up.
  4. I have literally no other symptoms of a failing motherboard. Windows runs perfectly. every other problem I've ever encountered has been minor and easily solved. Nothing takes forever to load.
  5. idk how much this factors in, but my monitor is plugged into the computer through the graphics card port (currently a tv through hdmi) and running on windows generic drivers.

My knowledge of how a computer works mechanically is barely enough to take it apart, clean, and put back together again. I don't understand a lot about all the technical details and how the (mis)behavior of any little piece affects the whole. My question is this: is it possible for a motherboard to be failing in such a way, or have a faulty piece such that it's behavior listed above (black screen with cursor on both graphic card ports when geforce driver is enabled, infinite hangs on startup on only one of the ports when geforce driver is enabled, windows generic drivers work with monitor plugged in through card and geforce driver does occasionally work either erratically or to an as-of-yet undiscovered pattern). Can a failing motherboard be crossed off the list of potential causes?

I'm still waiting to see if anyone else has any other ideas that I can test, or if they can read through the information I've already provided to narrow the search a little better. sorry this is so long, but I just want to be able to use my graphics driver again, guys. Without even knowing what the cause of the problem is, I can't even just buy a replacement part and be guaranteed that it will solve the problem (I tried my sister's card which was the same model and it behaved the same. I haven't been able to try a different model card yet.)

Unfortunately from the uploaded reports you appear to be infected with malware. For example, the one and only memory dump flagged a malicious driver — ndisrd.sys — as the culprit. Hence, I suggest you post in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum for expert malware removal help. Be sure to follow their Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help. :thumbup2: Once your system is confirmed clean, we'll move on from there...

Since malware appears to be at play here, and a tool whose logs are only allowed to be posted to the Malware Removal Logs forum has been used, I have split off a fork of this topic to the MRL forum:  Fork of: graphics driver causes black screen with cursor
