The problem: until yesterday my computer was 100% normal. Yesterday it suddenly became very very slow. Then a message appeared "True Vector Internet" not loading, or something similar (it comes up every 20 seconds or so). Then I noticed my Zone Labs firewall wasn't working. So I switched the Windows firewall back on. I haven't downloaded any program files recently. My computer is used by others in the house - but I can't see any new programs someone might have downloaded that might be causing this.

I ran Search and Destroy straight away and it picked up 8 problems, including these worrying sounding ones:

Microsoft Windows Security Centre_disabled

Telsaplus.com [which I searched to find was a spyware thing]

Microsoft Windows Security Centre. Antivirus disable notify

I followed some of the highlighted problems to find they are 'registry key changes' - though I do not know what this means. Please let me know if any of this is enough to indicate I should stay off the internet, and what I could do from here to solve the issue. Also, for what it's worth, I've noticed that the cooling fan is switching on and off every 5 seconds - if that's indicative of anything.

Thanks, and kind regards

Carl

Hi Blender

Thanks for your reply. My computer is still almost unusable. It is so slow as to make a 2 minute job into an hour long job. Typing a document is still possible, but as the computer freezes for 5 seconds every 15 seconds, it takes a while!

Below is a HJT log from this morning.

Since the last HJT log I have looked at the processes running and can see that vsmon.exe uses up to 90% of the CPU almost all of the time. Looking on the internet I've found that vsmon.exe is a process associated with Zone Alarm firewall, and that others have had similar problems to those I am experiencing. I have tried ending the process, but this does not work. There is a message from Zone ALarms that pops up on screen sometimes every minutes, sometimes every 5 miutes - it is only on screen for a split second, so I can't read what it says, but I can see it has a cancel button. I positioned the cursor above where I thought the cancel button would be and kept tapping the key pad, eventually I hit the cancel button and the computer ran normally again - I checked and found that vsmon.exe was no longer taking any cpu. However, after restarting the computer, vsmon.exe is again using 90% of the cpu and I haven't been able to hit the canel button again. Where to from here? Are you able to tell if I have a virus that has disabled my firewall, or do I just have a malfunctioning firewall?

Any advice much appreciated.

regards

Carl

Hi

Not much in your log shows except for Need2Find bar. I will need to see some more logs.
It sounds like either something I can't see yet is trying to kill your firewall or there is a serious conflict with one of your other apps.

Please post the following:

Open Hijackthis
Click "open Misc tools section"
Click "open Uninstall manager"
Click "save list..."
Save the list someplace & post the results. leave HJT open for next log..:

Click "back" button in hijackthis. (the upper one)
Check both options beside "generate startuplist log" and generate the log. Say OK & post results.

Might need 2 posts to get both logs in so they don't get cut off.

While waiting for me to get back...
See if you can Uninstall Ewido Antimalware. It is out of date and no longer supported.

If we can get some stability back we'll look at grabbing the new version.

While you are at it...see if you can uninstall Need2Find as well in add/remove programs.

Let me know if problems uninstalling those apps.

Question...

Can you get around OK in safe mode?
To get to safe mode...
Restart computer
As computer is starting up start tapping F8
It should take you to advanced menu screen.
Choose "safe mode" with arrow keys and hit enter.

Let me know if you can move around better this way.

Thanks
I'll have an order of massive trojan attack please with a side order of rootkit and virus dip.
Pre-course order of fresh spyware salad please with a side order of polymorphic dressing.
And to drink...a nice tall glass of adware!

For dessert; can I have a bowl of the freshest worms you have please?.

Never Give Up!

If you are happy with the service I provided, please consider making a donation to help me continue the fight against Malware Posted Image

Hi Charles

Thanks for your reply - my apologies for my slow response.

I've removed Ewido no problem. But I couldn't find 'Need2find' (ironically) in the softare list, so havent been able to remove it.

Yes, in safe mode, the computer is back to normal speed. Hopefully that tells you something.

And it's just occured to me that my girlfriend downloaded i-tunes recently, that's the latest software ato be added, a few days before I started having these troubles-maybe unassociated, but I thought I'd mention it.

Below are the logs

Thanks for your help.

Carl

Hi

Any chance you just updated your Zone Alarm recently? Right around the time issues started?

I notice you have messenger running, You must be getting tons of "messenger service" popups trying to push "registry cleaners" and such on you.

Highly recommended to disable this service. Most home users don't use it and it is just another gaping spam hole.
How to:

Click start> run> type services.msc and hit enter.
Scroll down to Messenger service.
Double click it to bring up properties.
Click Stop
Then set the service to disabled
Apply & Ok your changes.

This should free up some CPU.

Lets see if we can find the reamins of Need2Find.

Download Bobbi Flekman's RegSearch from
http://www.xs4all.nl/~fstaal01/downloads/regsearch.zip

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it RegSearch. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

Need2Find

On the next line type ND2FNBAR.DLL

On the next line type 4D1C4E81-A32A-416b-BCDB-33B3EF3617D3

then hit Ok

After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the strings. The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe.
Please post the results.

Next....

Download Blacklight beta from here:

http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try_blacklight.html

Accept agreement.
Download blbeta.exe and save it.
Disconnect from internet & disable antivirus to prevent conflict.
Shut down other apps that you have open.
Double click blbeta.exe and accept agreement.
Allow the driver to load if asked.
Click "scan"
Wait till scan is done.
Once finished if any results just hit "close".
Do Not use this tool to rename anything yet! Sometimes legit items are hidden.
Log file is created on desktop called fsbl***.txt (*** is date/time of scan)

Re-enable antivirus, reconnect to net and post contents of that log here.

Hi Blender

Thanks again.

I think I got an update of Zone Alarm maybe 3-4 weeks ago? I can't be sure, but it rings a bell. I'm sure I didn't get a new version right before I started having these troubles.

I wasn't aware 'messenger' was running (the truth is I don't even know what it is), I don't get lots of pop-ups though - maybe I have a 'pop-up blocker' as well? Either way, I'll follow your instructions to turn messenger off right now -thanks.

I'll get ride of need2find and post that log asap.

thanks

Carl

ps-I'm using another computer wherever possible to access the internet (like right now), do you think that is a wise or unnecessary precaution?

Hi

"messenger" is generally used in office/corperate type environments so the system admins can alert users of upgrades, pending network outages, etc instead of email. (which may not be seen right away).
these messeges would pop up right on each users desktop.

Likely your firewall stopping the most of it if not all. Popups don't work in this case because they are being generated from a program on your computer. More info:

http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

You won't need their tool though. We are disabling it ourselves.

-----------

If ZA update was installed before the issues you have...likely it is not the problem.

That log I'm getting from you regarding need2Find is just going to be results of the RegSearch tool.

I will have to build the fix based on its findings.

Not a bad idea to be keeping affected computer offline whenever possible till we figure out what is wrong.

Let me know if things improved any.
I want to run a few other tools but I don't want to 'stuff' up the system either.

Hi Blender

I've dsiabled messenger.

And run the Regsearch tool - results below.

I ran the Blacklight Beta - it said no hidden files found. Log below

The computer is now running faster if I leave it on, or put it on standby for a while. When I first turn it on after it being turned off, it runs slow and I can see vsmon.exe is taking up most of the CPU, but later, vsmon.exe seems to stop by itself. Go figure.

Also, I note that 'true vector internet' is disabled in the services list. I tried to disable it when I first had the problem (possibly a silly move given I had no idea what I was doing, other than googling 'true vector internet' and finding others said if you could disable it, Zone Alarms could be removed and then downloaded afresh), but I couldn't disable it - or so it said at the time. It looks like it actually did disable, and still is disabled. I hope that makes sense. Could this indicate anything (other than don't fiddle with your computer when you have no idea what you are doing).

thanks

Carl

Hello Blender

Have you had any luck with the logs and what they might indicate? My computer is the same (sometimes it is very slow, other times normal, always without a firewall). Without knowing if there is a virus in the computer I am loathe to use the internet. Any info you've been able to deduce would be great.

cheers

Carl

Hi

Sorry for late reply.

Something odd going on there...That Blacklight log is not normal.
A little stronger detection tool needed methinks

Download Gmer from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Save file and unzip it to its own folder on desktop.
Open folder and double click gmer.exe
If asked by firewall or other security program to let service install; say OK. (service name is gmer, driver is gmer.sys)
You may be warned at program start about possible system modification.
If you are; click "Yes" to scan.
if no warning, click the 'scan" button. leave settings as they are.
Wait till scan finishes.
Once done click "copy"
Open notepad & press "ctrl+v" on keyboard.
Save log and post it here.

**Note
Not all detections shown by this tool mean rootkit!!
Many legit services are hidden from user.
Some malwares hide legit files.
Please don't attempt to fix anythin with this tool yet!

If log is long you may need 2 posts.

I tried to run the fix.reg file and got the following message:

Cannot import C:\Documents and Settings\Carl\Desktop\fix1.reg:The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry.

I tried to run the vsmon, but did not get a 'success' message. I did get a list of about 10 lines of text/code, which I couldn't cut and paste, so haven't listed below. That list of text started with: invalid start=field. I hope that tells you something.

Below is the new HJT log:

I'm not sure how succesful I was in carrying out your suggestions, but thanks again for your help. Oh, and vsmon still takes up 60-100% of the CPU, but will stop if I put the computer on 'stanby' for 10 minutes. It will return if I restart the computer. Sheesh, odd!

thanks

Carl

Hi Blender

I forgot to say I searched for Need2find, and ran a search for it, and still couldn't locate it to remove it.

cheers

Hi

Gmer log looks OK. I believe it was your dvd software causing the strange entries in your blacklight log.

Please delete the fix.reg you have now and re-create it using the revised code above.

No harm done trying to run the first one because the script was messed up and windows didn't understand it so it could not merge it.

It should work this time.

then....

Make sure windows firewall is off. If both windows firewall and Zone Alarm are running you will have conflicts.
Windows Firewall can be disabled in the control panel.
Open Control panel & double click "Windows Firewall"
If you get a popup asking if you want to start firewall....say No & exit.

For vsmon, please try the command again using the revised command above.
Thanks for posting the error messege you got. Told me exactly what I did wrong.
No harm done as windows didn't understand what we told it to do so it could not carry out the command.

Reboot after please.

Let me know if true vector stays up.

Please also post a fresh hijackthis log.

Thanks :flowers:
I'll have an order of massive trojan attack please with a side order of rootkit and virus dip.
Pre-course order of fresh spyware salad please with a side order of polymorphic dressing.
And to drink...a nice tall glass of adware!

For dessert; can I have a bowl of the freshest worms you have please?.

Never Give Up!
