I seem to get spates of SPAM from time to time. Most recently lots of GoogleHangout requests, which is odd as GoogleHangout or any of their GooglePlus stuff I've never utilised. I also get what looks like typical Nigerian type scam attempts, emails from 'women' looking for love etc. All pretty transparent stuff. I NEVER click on any links / images, and access them through GMAIL, is this in itself risky? Sometimes they come to my inbox, so if it's not going to spam / promotions folder i dont always know they're spam until i've looked at them.

Is there any risks in merely opening the email and reading the text?

As a rule, no. Just don't click on anything and delete the emails.
