Hi maroondog1,

* You are running Hijackthis from a temporary file, but Hijackthis should be in a permanent folder to save its backups in case we need to undo any changes. Please delete the one you currently have.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Save it to your desktop. Don't run it yet.

* Go to Start> Settings> Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs and unistall if listed:

XXXCodec

* Please re-open HijackThis and Scan. Check the below entries (if found):

O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.155 85.255.112.77

O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.155 85.255.112.77
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\{10B01F7F-14E1-4AAE-9E48-ADF796747517}: NameServer = 85.255.115.155,85.255.112.77
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.155 85.255.112.77

O23 - Service: XXXCodec Service (XXXCodec Acceleration Service) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\XXXCodec\casrv.exe (file missing)

Close any open windows except for HijackThis then click on Fix checked.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CSXMZ.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMPWE.EXE
    C:\Program Files\XXXCodec

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

* Download and save Blacklight to your desktop (choose "I ACCEPT" then click "DOWNLOAD" on the website).

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > "Scan" then > "Next".

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx stand for numbers).

* Copy and paste this log with a new hijackthis one in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe".

Olivier,

I hope I didn't mess this up. I got a little confused on your hijackthis directions and to which program you were referring to with the "don't choose the rename option yet". Immediately below is the first hijackthis log I did prior to downloading Killbox and Blacklight, which was your first instruction. I named it hijackthis1.log:

Secondly, I suppose Killbox deleted the two System32 files but it wouldn't accept the XXXCodec in the box. After the computer rebooted, I ran Killbox again, manually typed in the XXXCodec file and received the message "Pending File Rename Operations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" I seem to remember this file being the one I had a problem with a few months ago and it should be resolved.

Hi maroondog1,

* Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find

XXXCodec Service

Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. File-Exit the Services utility.

Note: You may get an error here when trying to access the properties of the service. If you do get an error, just select the service and look there in the top left of the main service window and click "Stop" to stop the service. If that gives an error or it is already stopped, just skip this step and proceed with the rest.

* Please re-open HijackThis and Scan. Check the below entry:

O23 - Service: XXXCodec Service (XXXCodec Acceleration Service) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\XXXCodec\casrv.exe (file missing)

Close any open windows then click on Fix checked.

* Boot into Safe mode by tapping F8 as your computer restarts and delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\XXXCodec

* Restart in normal mode and post back a new hijackthis log for review, please.

Olivier,

XXXCodec was already stopped in the service window but I Disabled the startup and applied. I then ran hijackthis and the 023 entry was not there to check. I closed and rebooted in Safe mode and could not find the C:\Program Files\XXXCodec file. I ran a search and couldn't find it that way either. I then rebooted normally and ran hijackthis again and here's the log:

You're welcome, maroondog1

Please create a new restore point as explained here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/h...ew_03may19.mspx

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet
