Is there a way  for me to check which version on USB I have? 2 or 3?

In Device Manager, the very last item Universal Serial Bus controllers.  If you expand it you should an entry for USB X.X eXtensible Host Controller.

 

Physically USB 3.x plugs normally have blue on the inside.

Physically USB 3.x plugs normally have blue on the inside.

 

I only wish the blue plastic guides had remained the de facto standard, but they haven't.  The vast majority of really new hardware I've been dealing with has the same black guides in both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, but the letters "SS" are impressed in the plastic surround for the USB 3.0 ports.  Since this is generally in black plastic, too, it's a grand PITA to determine which is which easily.

 

I'm just glad my own laptop and my partner's date from the "blue guide" period.
