The question as to whether one "needs" any update is a moot point.

Windows 10 has, from day one, operated under the new "Windows as a Service" paradigm and it is part and of that paradigm that updates are going to be applied as they roll out.  When it arrives it will apply, though you can do some things to control at what time of day the update will be applied and/or to defer an update (the latter if you are using Windows 10 Pro).

Soon enough Version 1709 will go live, but if it's like prior major updates it will take months until even 50% of Windows 10 computers will have it.
