You need to borrow a XP cd of the same type(pro with pro, etc.) and do a system repair, link:

Restore disks are often just keys that open an image of the harddrive but I can't say not knowing what comp you have.

The Recovery disk will work unless you have a hardware problem but you may have to set your boot order to boot from CD first.

To do that you enter setup (or bios) when you first start to boot. Look at the screen as soon as you boot for the key to press.

The manufacturer's Recovery disk will reset your computer's software to exactly how it was when new but you will loose all data, Windows Updates and programs you installed that did not come with the computer.

What brand and model is this computer?

Are you saying you changed the boot order in the bios to cd as the first boot device and you can't boot from the restore cd?
(You put the restore cd in the cd-rom or burner and reboot with it in there)

What brand and model is your computer?

With Windows XP, that won't work. It will recognize that it is not the smae copy with which you originally installed XP and it will not go any further until you insert that copy.

It won't work in any case if it won't boot from the CD.

I believe the boot order still needs to be set in the bios.
