Hello all,
I recently have been infected with a nasty bunch of malware and a possible virus. Things that occur: Norton popping up saying I have a virus that cannot be removed in my Temp. Internet folder, random IE popups, random tab popups in Firefox. Something about WinAntiVirusPro 2006. I also have flashing "Virus Alert" next to my clock, which is pretty annoying. I should also note that at the very beginning I had something like, Spyquake2 or some sort. I quickly deleted it since I have never installed a file of that name.

I have searched several paths on how to go about removing these and have already tried a few ideas. I have ran Adaware and after getting rid of most of it, it now auto-restarts my computer whenever I try to run it again.

I have also rebooted my computer in safemode and have ran ewido anti-spyware.

Hi,

You are currently running HijackThis from a "Temp" folder. HijackThis will create a number of backup files which may be lost, along with the HijackThis program, if left in a temporary folder.
Please create a permanent folder such as C:\HJT\ and move the HijackThis program there.

To create a permanent folder:
*Click My Computer, then C:\
*In the menu bar, File -> New ->Folder.
*That will create a folder named New Folder which you can rename to "HJT".
*Now move HijackThis.exe to the C:\HJT\ folder.

Next, rename HijackThis.exe to kitty.exe by doing the following:
- Navigate to the newly-created folder where you moved HijackThis.exe
- Right-click onto HijackThis.exe and select "Rename"
- Type kitty.exe and hit Enter.

Now, double-click onto kitty.exe (which is still hijackthis) and post back with the new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Ok, I apologize for that first log. Here is the new log that I ran from "kitty.exe". Thanks!

Hi,

Please download VundoFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.
- Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it
- Click the Scan for Vundo button
- Once it is done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button
- You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files
- Click YES
- Once you click YES, your Desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo
- When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer
- Click OK

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, so simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Once VundoFix has completed scanning, please do not run it again.
If you run it more than one time, you will overwrite the original log generated when it was run the first time.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi,

Please follow these directions.
Only for Windows XP and Windows 2000

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Posted Image

______________________________
Next:

Update ewido anti-spyware
Close ewido anti-spyware. Do Not run a scan yet.

______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

Posted Image

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns, so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: C:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note: The file process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool." It is not a virus but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs; therefore, they may alert the user.

Post back with the C:\rapport.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Please print or copy these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection. Make sure to work through all the steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you do not understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

Posted Image

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Close ALL browsers and open windows / programs.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
  • IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions
    "
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it as a text file on your Desktop (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close Ewido.

______________________________

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
______________________________

Post back with:
1. C:\rapport.txt;
2. Ewido log; and
3. a new HijackThis log

Your may need several replies to post the requested logs. Otherwise, they might get cut off.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi,

Well, we got rid of two major infections. Unfortunately, one of the scans revealed that you also have a rootkit on your system. Please follow these instructions.

Download IceSword
Note: Because it is a RAR file, you will need 7-Zip to unpack it.

Extract it to your desktop.

1. Double-click on IceSword.exe

2. Use the registry function in IceSword to see if the following pe386 service autostart key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\pe386

3. If it does exist, then right-click on pe386 and select the Delete option from the menu that opens.

4. Use the registry function again to see if the following key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\msguard

5. If it does exist, then right-click on msguard and select the Delete option from the menu that opens.

Reboot your computer and post a fresh HijackThis log. Let me know if you encountered any problems while you were following the instructions I posted.

Haha, I guess that figures. I had no problems running the program, and I had both files you listed. I deleted both of the file folders (and I assume the files with them since they no longer showed up) Here is the new log:

Hi,

We still have more steps to take regarding the rootkit. After we get rid of it, then we will return to your HijackThis log.

Open HijackThis but do NOT run a HijackThis scan.
- Instead, click Open the Misc Tools section - then click Open ADS Spy...
- When ADS Spy opens, uncheck the following options:
Quick scan
Ignore safe system info info streams

- Then click Scan to scan you entire system for ADS Spy to begin
- At the end of the scan, remove any items that match the pe386 rootkit driver C:\Windows\System32:lzx32.sys by highlighting the entry and then clicking Remove selected
- Finally, click the Save Log button and paste a copy the log results in your next topic reply.
Note: The log will be VERY long, and you probably will have to break it into two parts/replies.

Reboot your computer. (Important!)

Now, download Grisoft AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta and save it to your Desktop.
- Double-click onto the file to install the program.
- Click Search for rootkits
- When the scan is done, it will pause if locates pe386 and will ask if you want to remove it
- Click Yes and then click Save results to file
- Click Perform in-depth search to repeat the process and the steps above.

Post back with the ADS log and the log from AVG Anti-Rootkit if anything was found.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

A quick question- I just ran the ADS spy, and you said I should have a long file. Mine is maybe 10 lines long, I reread the instructions and did everything you listed. There wasn't any files I saw to delete or any files at all that listed c:/WINDOWS/<>

Is that correct?
