Specs: Windows 10 on a Thinkpad T470s
Problem: Programs that generate files seem to be failing
Attempted Solutions: Running as administrator, and reinstalling the software described below

I first ran into an issue when trying to git init through the git bash shell. I was getting permission denied errors. I assumed it was a windows security feature and attempted to run as admin. It did not work so I tried Git CMD instead of Git Bash and that worked. For this reason at the time I assumed it was just a quirk of Git on my machine, or I botched the configuration in some way. No big deal.

Later in the day I was attempting to create a new Java application project via Netbeans. When I attempt to create a project it is able to create the folder structure of the project, but it is not filling in the directories such that the size of the project directory ends up being 0 bytes. The GUI is not explicitly telling me its encountering a permission denied scenario but I strongly suspect that is the case.

At this point I began to suspect there is a problem that lies outside these two pieces of software. I feel like there is some security feature I am missing, or else my windows installation has become corrupted somehow. I took a look at my security settings and everything seems to be as I would expect. I have had none of these problems on my desktop, so I am really at a loss. I don't know if this is the best forum for this type of problem but I would really appreciate any advice anyone might have.

I will check back so if you have any questions or need any more information please let me know. Thanks for your time.

Hi pyoung36, welcome to Bleeping Computer.

If this is file corruption you should run sfc /scannow.

Please run System File Checker.

Please run System File Checker.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Important:  There will be a short message at the end of the scan informing you of the results.  If you receive the message "no integrity violations were found" you don't need to do anything else, no corrupt files were found.  You should watch the scan to see the results at the end of the scan.

This needs to be run using an Administrator account.

You will need to open the Command Prompt to run the sfc /scannow.  The easiest way to do this is to press the Windows key and the X key.   A menu will open with the option Command Prompt (Admin), click on this.  This will open the Command Prompt.

Important:  Depending on which version of Windows 10 you are using the option in the menu for Command Prompt (Admin) may have been replaced with Windows PowerShell (Admin).  The command used here needs to be run from the Command Prompt (Admin).

To switch the option back from Windows PowerShell (Admin) open the start menu, tap/click on Settings, then select Personalization, then Taskbar.

Under Taskbar you will see the option Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when you right-click the start button or press Window key + X key.  Move the switch so that Command Prompt (Amin) is on.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.

Copy and paste the command below in the Command Prompt, then press Enter.

sfc /scannow

This scan will take a while to run, please do not abort the scan as this can result in damage to the operating system.

If integrity issues are found in the scan please post the CBS log using the instructions below.

To find sfc /scannow log click/tap on File Explorer, select the drive which Windows is installed on (this usually is the C: drive), click/tap on Windows, then Logs, then CBS.  If there are more than one log you can identify the log you want by the date and time it was run.

Copy and paste the log at the host website I've suggested below.

This log usually is very large, for this reason you should use a host website like Dropbox to post the log.  You can start a free 30 day trial.  Once you have loaded the log at Dropbox post a link to the website.

Please run Speccy Snapshot, this will provide us with specific information about you computer and its components.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

 speccy1.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

 speccy2.png

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

 speccy3.png

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Sounds good. I'll give it a shot later today and get back to you. I need to put some time into some data preprocessing scripts. Thanks!

I'll be gone for a couple of hours between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm PST.  I'll check when I get back.

Hi

You could try to manually create files under netbeans project  and see if that gives you permission error.

Also what is the file path for your files and projects?

Were you aware that the maximum amount of supported RAM with this motherboard is 20GB?  You have 24GB installed.

Did you select this Kingston module or did you get help from Kingston?  The speed of the RAM originally installed is 2133 MHz, the new module's speed is 2134 MHz.

The Autoupdates are not configured.  We need to know which version of Windows 10 you have installed.  Please do the following and post the results.

Press the Windows key windows-key.png and the R key at the same time to open the Run box.

Copy and paste or type in winver, then press Enter.

Yes I am aware regarding the RAM. The amount has not been an issue and as far as I understand it will downclock the 2134 to 2133.

Windows 10, version 1607, OS build 14393.1593, 2016.

I ended up trying to create a single file using netbeans like Slurppa suggested and ran into the same permissions issue. I ended up deciding to try making a new windows account classified as a regular user rather then admin, and under this new account everything works perfectly. Since it is unwise to use an admin account for daily use anyway I am comfortable with the solution. I've set VirtualBox to always run as administrator so I don't have to seek out and reestablish all my VMs. Everything else is easily migrated to this new user account.

For the sake of knowledge and helping anyone else who finds this thread I will continue to trouble shoot with you if you feel the same way. If not that is fine too.

Looks like you had a corrupt user account.  It happens.  Let us know if the new account resolves your issues.

The reason I was asking what version you are running is because the 1607 version had problems which were resolved in the Creators update 1703.  I would highly recommend downloading and installing this update.  This could save you a potential headache.
