One of my friends got scammed by an outfit called Digitech Info Solutions.  A popup appeared that she was unable to close, so "like an idiot" (her own words), she called the number displayed in the popup and allowed a scammer access to her computer and bank account.  She already called her bank to close the account and said she was going in the next day to open a new account, as they had her routing numbers.  They told her not to even use her computer until someone had fixed it, which is where I come in.

I think I found what they used to get in -- a LogMeIn installation from the same day the scam occurred.  I can't imagine that my friend installed that intentionally, so I uninstalled it.  I also found some sort of Ad Blocking software -- I forget the name.  Since it was also from that same day, I assumed it was also bogus and uninstalled that as well.  If it turns out that one was actually legit, they can reinstall it when I give it back.

After I was done, I scanned the system with Malwarebytes, and also an Avira Rescue CD.  Neither of those found anything, which surprises me.  Usually if I uninstall some piece of malware, there are still bits and pieces scattered throughout the system.  That, and the scammers somehow added text to the taskbar showing their phone number and website.  I've never seen anything like that before, and I have no idea how to get rid of it.

I went ahead and ran FRST as per the instructions.  Here are the logs:

Greetings The_Antihero and :welcome: to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.

My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.

If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that.

===================================================

Ground Rules:
  • First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met.
  • Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
  • Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence.
  • Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.
  • If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
  • When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.
  • I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.

So it was a toolbar.  I didn't even think to check that, but then I don't use them myself.  For some reason I never really had much use for them.  Anyway, it's gone now.  :)

I don't think the search found anything.  Here's the results:

In this situation the "Toolbar" is actually a sort of shortcut to a folder. Let's use another program to look for the folder.

Please do this.

===================================================

SystemLook by jpshortstuff

--------------------
  • Please download SystemLook for either 64 bit or 32 bit systems and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click SystemLook.exe and select Run as administrator...
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
:folderfind
*Digitech*
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please copy and paste the report contents in your reply.

There was a folder on the desktop before I started uninstalling stuff and before I came here for help.  I'm thinking it was deleted by one of the uninstallations or by myself.

Greetings,

That entry is relatively insignificant. Everything else looks good.

Are there any other remaining issues?
