Hi all,

I read through some of the other posts here and can't seem to figure out my issue. I read the sticky and attached the proper files.

Some background:

  • Purchased ASUS Zenbook 3 in June
  • First BSOD was in late July which I've figured out was shortly after purchasing this mouse and setting up a wireless HP printer at home
  • Tried a few things (removing printer drivers, didn't think it was the mouse at this point)
  • Factory reset, but after it kept happening
  • Posted a minidump file to Microsoft Community and someone pointed out it was identifying "Microsoft_Bluetooth_Legacy_LEEnumerator"
  • I've since tried updating the Bluetooth drivers from Intel and ASUS (as well as all other drivers) with no luck

The BSOD happens sporadically. It happened twice when I was playing Starcraft 2, so I thought it could have been overheating as Speccy was reporting temps in the low 70s. But I cooled the computer down and it happened again. I did even notice once that the mouse stopped working, the keyboard worked, and then it crashed. Then it happened this morning when the computer was at room temperature about a minute after I turned it on. I haven't been using the mouse since then and it hasn't crashed, but I've also used it for hours with the mouse and it hasn't crashed.

Is it seriously just the mouse? Would it happen again with another mouse? Or is it the Bluetooth radio in general?

I put a ticket in to ASUS, but I figured someone here might be able to help identify something I am missing. I appreciate any time and help you all might offer.

Thanks!

Brian

Your UEFI/BIOS (version UX390UAK.312) dates from April of 2017.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  This is just in case there has been a more recent update.
FYI - W8 and W10 communicate more with the UEFI/BIOS than previous versions of Windows, so it's important to ensure that the UEFI/BIOS is kept up to date (and that outdated UEFI/BIOS' may be the cause of some compatibility issues).

Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this version of your OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.  The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.

The errors are primarily due to the Microsoft Bluetooth drivers.  Please:

- download a fresh copy of the latest, W10 compatible bluetooth drivers for your system from the Asus website.

- uninstall the current bluetooth drivers from your system

- install the freshly downloaded drivers

- monitor for further BOSD"s (it's possible something else is causing this - either software or hardware).

Thanks for the information. Although I have done most of these steps before, I just went through everything to be sure:

  • Checked the BIOS. It's version 312, which on ASUS' site, says 6/22/17, but says the April date in the driver. Weird, but it's still the most up to date one.
  • Uninstalled everything in the Bluetooth menu. The weird thing here is that they often resintall themselves (especially after a restart, which is requested after uninstallation). I tried to reinstall immediately after uninstalling and it told me that I already had the most up to date drivers. So this seems to be an issue...
  • I did contact ASUS and they basically responded saying they wanted me to file a request for repair since it's under warranty. I am going to do that if it keeps happening and I can't find any other work-arounds.

So very weird.

It's actually not that big of an issue.  What happens is that OEM's are using the Microsoft drivers, and when using them the Microsoft OS detects that they're removed and are needed - so it automatically reinstalls them.  You can defeat that, but it takes much more work than we usually go into here (defeating the system file protection mechanisms isn't a lot of fun).  For our purposes, uninstalling them and letting Windows reinstall them is enough for now.

Go ahead and file a request for repair if the warranty lapses soon.  If it's not soon, wait until you've tried everything before sending it off to them.
Most often the OEM will require that you reinstall Windows from their recovery media before they accept it back for repair (because they'll also do it when they receive it).  For most Asus systems, this is a RESET with "Remove Everything".  If they receive it, and they can't find anything wrong, they'll send it back unrepaired - usually with a note that says "No fault found" - that's why it's best for you to describe in great detail how to make the error show up.
