I am having an issue with my PC freezing up/ crashing frequently. Sometimes it will just become unresponsive and I have to restart. Other times the screen will go to a garbled mess of colors.

I've run malware bytes and windows defender and the pc comes up clean. I run the Dell system diagnostics software and no problems are reported.

The PC is a Dell XPS 8300 running windows 10.  Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!

Topic was moved from Crashes/BSODs at Staff request.  I believe that they would like someone to explore the possibility of Win 10 issues before passing the topic to either malware or some other forum.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Please boot into Safe Mode to see if this problem persists.  There is a chance that this problem is related to your graphics.

It would be very much appreciated if you would do the Speccy Snapshot.

Safe Mode in Windows 10

Press the Windows key and the R key to open the Run box.

Type msconfig in the Run box and click/tap OK.  This will open System Configuration.

Click/tap on the Boot tab, then click/tap on Safe boot.

Click/tap on Apply, then OK.

Important:  Once you have set the computer to boot into Safe Mode it will continue to do this until you go back to System Configuration, open the Boot tab and remove the check from Safe boot.

One thing I saw that might be effecting this is that you have mismatched RAM. On some occasions that can cause problems. I'll let some of the more experienced tech weigh in on that. I personally believe we're dealing with a graphics card or power supply issue.

@HyperHenry

The four RAM modules are identical, check the manufacturer's part number.  Even if these had not be identical the fact that these modules are running in dual channel would suggest that the modules are compatible.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

@mr2005

You have several problems besides the video driver.

The Speccy will occasionally throw out information which is suspect.  In this case I'm concerned about the voltages it is reporting.  If these readings are accurate you have a significant problem with your PSU.

+3.3V: = 2.796 V
+5V:    = 2.762 V
+12V:  = 10.944 V

Please open the BIOS and copy the voltages reported there, post these voltages in your topic.  These readings are usually only as good as the sensors used to generate these readings, but the BIOS is the most accurate representation of the voltages.  The best way to read these voltages would be with a multimeter.  If you have a multimeter and know how to use it let me know and I will provide you with acceptable voltage variances.

The temperatures shown in the Speccy are high enough to cause some concern.  This is a desktop computer, with proper ventilation these temperatures shouldn't be this high.  I would suggest purchasing a canned Duster (often mistakenly referred to as canned air) and blow out the inside of the case.  Pay special attention to the heatsink and fan assembly on the CPU.

Your C: drive is a 100GB SSD, this is down to 10.6GB of free space, that's 10%.  With a drive of this size you should have at least 15% free space.  You should see what you can transfer to one of you HDDs to free up space on the SSD.

I was just referring to that 2 were 2 GB sticks and 2 were 4 GB sticks. I didn't think it was the cause but stranger things have happened and thought it was worth noting.

Sorry for the delayes response.

  • I went into the Bios and didn't see and voltages listed anywhere
  • picking up a canned Duster and will blow the heatsink as advised. It is a desktop pc.
  • I don't have a multimeter. How difficult is it to change out the PSU just so I can eliminate it as the source of the problem?

MiniToolBox shows the following error in the System category (which agrees with dc3's and HyperHenry's initial assessments):

Error: (08/28/2017 08:31:36 AM) (Source: BugCheck) (User: )

Description: 0x00000116 (0xffffde008c9324a0, 0xfffff807da10cad8, 0xffffffffc0000001, 0x0000000000000003)C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMPf4ca959a-03df-4f11-ac02-e32ab14d37ed

More info on this error here:  http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x00000116

As such, I'd suggest following the suggestions here:  http://www.carrona.org/VideoTDR.html

hi

i've updated the video driver via the suggestions in the link you provided.

The VideoTDR error, in short, is either the driver - or there's a hardware problem.

Follow the steps at the link if the problem continues.

If it continues, eventually you'll have to try another video card to see if that fixes the problem.

Most often that's all that's needed - BUT - sometimes the problem can be deeper in the system (such as a problem with the motherboard).

Let us know what's happening and we'll suggest the appropriate steps.

It would be much less expensive to purchase PSU tester to see if the rail voltages within proper tolerances.  You can purchase one for as little as $6.99.

Hi, as referenced by usasma your video card is the most likely candidate, having updated the drivers you should wait for a while to see if the problem is resolved, you might also like to look at the connection to the monitor, making sure it is secure, as well as, changing out to test.

We do not use third party software utils to check temps or voltages, you should all be aware that the nature of sensors, their location and the interpretation of hex readings can vary. The problem has to do with the lack of standards covering these issues, there are no universal standards nor any minimum specifications for the sensors used. Speccy is well known more for it's voltage errors then it's temperatures.

However the PSU is one of the most important (yet mostly ignored) hardware component of any computer, and a failing or inconsistent power supply can and does cause the sort of problems you reference. Windows errors can have multiple causes and we refer to it as the dog chasing it's tail.

From dc3's link, once you have your tester, this article is a good guide to checking a PSU:- (from my notes)

If you have a multimeter, you can test the power supply output before purchasing a new one. Simply follow these steps:

Turn off the PC, but do not unplug it. Open the system unit. Set the multimeter to read DC volts in the next range higher than 12 volts. Locate a power connector similar to the hard drive (or CD-ROM drive connector that is unused) and turn on the PC.
You can also unplug a drive connector and use it. Turn on the PC and insert the BLACK probe into the power connector on one of the BLACK wires. Touch the RED probe to the YELLOW wire on the power connector.
The multimeter reading should be +12 volts. Now touch the RED probe to the RED wire and the reading should be +5 volts. If no readings or different readings occurred, you'll have to replace the power supply. If the readings were correct, you should check the P8 or P9 connectors at the motherboard. These connectors may also be named P4 and P5. To check these connectors, perform the following:
Insert the BLACK probe into P8 at one of the BLACK wires. Insert the RED probe into the P8 connector at the RED wire. The reading on the multimeter should be +5 volts.
Check the power going to the motherboard connections by inserting the RED probe into P8 at the YELLOW wire and you should get +12 volts. Leave the BLACK wire touching the BLACK wire at the P8 connector. Check the BLUE wire and the reading should be a -12 volts.
Now move the BLACK probe to the BLACK wire on the P9 connector. Test the WHITE wire by inserting the RED probe and the reading should be -5 volts. Check the RED wires on the P9 connector and you should get +5 volts on each red wire. You won't get exactly 5 or 12 volts, but the readings will be very close, such as 5.02 volts.
If the Power Supply is a couple of volts off in either direction, such as when the RED wire should be reading -5 volts but it reads -8 volts, or if there are no readings, replace the power supply.
DO NOT remove the power supply from the system unit case when performing these tests. DO NOT perform these tests if you do not feel comfortable. Be sure to remove any and all electrical static build-up from your clothes and body BEFORE touching any parts inside the system unit. And NEVER open the power supply case for any reason, since high voltage may be present.
